Concert Calendar early April Edition & Ticket Contests

With the music "season" starting with South by SouthWest in March, April has been such a great time for tours and new albums.  2013 is starting off the just as expected.  Here's some must see shows coming to towns near you. Purling Hiss are touring for their March release Water On Mars.  Their low-fi, indie-hard-rock sound is reminiscent of early Nirvana.  Regardless of who they remind you of, do yourself a favor and check out the fuzzy 'Lolita' 04 Apr 2013 Williamsburg, NY 05 Apr 2013 Johnny Brenda's Philadelphia, PA 06 Apr 2013 Metro Gallery Baltimore, MD 07 Apr 2013 Maxwell's Hoboken, NJ 09 Apr 2013 O'Brien's Pub Allston, MA  10 Apr 2013 BAR Nightclub New Haven, CT   12 Apr 2013 Brillobox Pittsburgh, PA   13 Apr 2013 Ace of Cups Columbus, OH 14 Apr 2013 The Garden Bowl Detroit, MI 15 Apr 2013 The Empty Bottle Chicago, I 16 Apr 2013 7th St. Entry Minneapolis, MN 18 Apr 2013 Linneman's Riverwest Inn Milwaukee, WI 19 Apr ...

2012 Year-End Awards - Song of the Year

Wish Lists, Best of list, Worst of list, It's the list time of year, really anything you can think of.   Here we will take a stab at the Root Down In The Shadow - Song of the Year. With tons of great music out there I decided to break these down into a few categories.   We'll have Pop/Rap , Funk , Expecting more in '13 , Rock/Metal/Alt Metal , Local , Fun & Old School .  But to get this started right, we'll kick off with the basic Song Of The Year.   Everyone should have heard these by now, and should love them.   Check the links.. some of these songs are FREE DOWNLOADS!!!! In no particular order... 1. "TEBOWIE" by Jimmy Fallon  When I first heard about this song, I wanted nothing to do with it, as the Tebow phenomenon was just so tiresome.  But after I bought Blow Your Pants Off for the wife, for her anniversary present, I couldn't get enough of this son.  Jimmy Fallon completely nails this song, including an incre...

Cover Songs of the Year 2012

1. Spirit Family Reunion - "Green Rocky Road" Traditional Sandwiched in the middle of their incredible 2012 release No Separation , this traditional has become owned by the Brooklyn sextet. Green Rocky Road has been played in the past by such folk stars such as Arlo Guthrie or Elizabeth Mitchell, but none has taken the song on with such a life! Mat Davidson on fiddle & Maggie Carlson on banjo have absorbed every note and tone of the song and bring it alive. Just watch the video once(Skip ahead to 4:05), and you will be hard pressed to not want to watch and hear more from this band. On this short 3 song set, you get a great glimpse into this jovial and upbeat band. Spirit Family Reunion - "Green Rocky Road" Tiny Desk Concert If you have the opportunity, go see this band live !  Pittsburgh that means YOU. Spirit Family Reunion is coming to Club Cafe on December 11th! Previously Featured:  Concert Review April 2012 or Concert Review October 2011 ...

Philadelphia metro area November Concert Preview

Despite being on a writing hiatus these last several months, I have not left my obsession of concerts and new music.  I am very eager to share some of my recent exploits with my readers, including some albums to add to your holiday wish lists.  But before it's too late, I owe some of you a much needed Concert Preview post! Here goes! First up: SPIRIT FAMILY REUNION . When Spirit Family Reunion comes to town, you won't be lost in the glitz and glamour.  In fact, you rarely see singer Nick Panken outfitted in much more than a white T-Shirt!   With or without setlist, what you do have is a pure love for the bringing their joyful noise to the fans.  What comes to mind is Revival when listening to this sextet.   Whether spiritual, traditional or folk, it's a sound that can only leave you warm inside and smiling on the outside.  NPR Tiny Desk concert for Spirit Family Reunion go to http://spiritfamilyreunion.com/#shows Nov 14 Maxwell...

Spirit Family Reunion @the Brunch Session - Boston Mass

The Boston area + greater Massachusetts area is a hot bed for out of the box live music opportunities.  Entities such as Billsville, Sleepover Shows , and Kitchen Sessions have been helping bands that I adore for quite some time. A few weeks ago, I was planning out a trip to Boston to catch my first Fenway Park game.  It was going to be me, the wife, my brosef, his g-friend and NO KIDDO!  It was also an afternoon game for the Red Sox, so I started stalking the net to see what else might be available that weekend.    Cherubs started strumming their harps and a choir of angels starting singing, as I found the Brunch Session !   Not only did I find a Boston house concert, but it was Sunday, for Brunch, and Spirit Family Reunion was the feature band! Unlike Newport Folk Festival last year where I had to leave before getting to see The Head and the Heart , and The Civil Wars , I would be able to do this full event and make it back to Jersey ...

Concert Review - Spirit Family Reunion @ CMJ Festival event - The Big Screen Plaza - New York, NY

Daytime view of the Big Screen Plaza - Photo Dan McGurk Spirit Family Reunion from Brooklyn NY played two gigs Friday October 21st, in New York, New York.  The first set was at the Big Screen Plaza as part of the CMJ Festival and an event for the Invisible Children .  Although not the best surroundings for such intimate music, the band did a great job despite less than stellar conditions. The band has been playing as a sextet.  Nick Panken on vocals and Maggie Carlso n lead the way, with Peter Pezzimenti on drums, Ken Woodward on upright bass, Mat Davidson on fiddle, and a fella I only heard referred to as "Japhy" as stand in wash board player for Stephen Weinheimer. Spirit Family Reunion @ the Big Screen Plaza October 21st, 2011 - Photo Dan McGurk The band mixed in some of the tracks from their self titled album, some songs from their Song Book, and a traditional, the Mat Davidson led 'Green Rocky Road', which the band credits to "King" ...

Weekly Update -October 25th edition

- Coolest roundabout discoveries on the net.. I was out and about on the net, following up on some leads. I had been turned onto a band Jason Heath and the Greedy Souls, due to their cool cover of 'Crazy Train' found on their debut release The Vain Hope Of Horse 'Crazy Train is an incredible song as you all should know.  Who doesn't know the Ozzy track most recently made famous again on the MegaMind Soundtrack .  But this is the perfect cover as there is a fantastic departure musically from the original. It's only in instances like this that you are forced to get to know the original song, instead of just banging along to a tune you've known for years and never actually listened to deeply. Of course a click or two later, I'm on the video for 'Anarchist Girl' by Jason Heath and the Greedy Souls, from their Packed for Exile (Sampler EP)   A few clicks later, I'm checking out their site ( www.jasonheathandthegreedysouls.com) .  On...
