Concert Review - Elizabeth Mitchell - Wilmington, DE april 28th, 2012

Elizabeth Mitchell and band graced the Wilmington, DE waterfront on a recent Saturday morning for a wonderful Kindie (Kid-Indie) show at the Grand Opera House!  Fittingly, as her first album was intended to be for her family, it's with no great irony that the band is made up of her family!  Her husband Daniel Littleton handles the guitars and backing vocals.  His brother Miggy was on the drums right behind his wife and fellow kid artist The Good Miss Padgett !  Miggy & Anna's daughter held the enviable position of dancer and idea giver!  Nearly family and great friend Jean Cook plays the violin. The star of the show, one could argue is the daughter of Elizabeth Mitchell and Daniel Littleton, the amazing Storey Littleton.  She wonderfully takes on the recorder on 'You Are My Sunshine', harmonica on 'Who's My Pretty Baby' and backing vocals on many songs but most prominently on 'Three Little Birds' and 'Lovely Day'. The true star is c...

Molly Song of the Week - Little Liza Jane by Elizabeth Mitchell

I first mentioned Elizabeth Mitchell in a previous Molly Song of the Week 'Jenny Jenkins' by Lisa Loeb .  As remarked, in 2003 Lisa Loeb had teamed up with her musician pal Elizabeth Mitchell to create Catch the Moon .  This was Lisa Loeb's first children's album, however this was nothing new to Elizabeth Mitchell as she had already had put out two kids albums.  In '98 she released You Are My Flower, and in '02 she released You Are My Sunshine.   Unlike the duet album with Lisa Loeb which gets a little silly with songs 'Little Red Caboose', 'Stop and Go', or 'Catch The Moon', Mitchell's solo albums are a little more refined.  Her 2006 release, You Are My Little Bird starts off with this week's Molly Song of the Week, 'Little Liza Jane.'  The approximately 100 year old traditional is the standout track from the album.  The collection is varied from Bob Marley cover 'Three Little Birds' to Woody Guthrie remake ...

Molly Song of the Week - Jenny Jenkins by Lisa Loeb

One of my earliest posts was describing the concept of Molly Songs, which is a combination of tolerable children's music and music from artists that I love that can mix right in amongst her tunes.  In some rare cases, such as Lisa Loeb , there is an awesome combination of a singer that I  enjoy and purposefully brilliant children's music. When Lisa Loeb was at Brown, she ofter played with another singer/songwriter Elizabeth Mitchell .   In 2003, Loeb & Mitchell teamed up for Catch the Moon a very successful kids album.  Featured are the traditional 'Big Rock Candy Mountain', 'Stop and Go', "Little Red Caboose' and the title track' 'Catch the Moon' .   Since that, Lisa Loeb has put out Camp Lisa, on her own, and for over a  decade there have been solo Elizabeth Mitchell albums.  However amongst all of those fantastic kid songs, Molly's favorite is a stand alone single 'Jenny Jenkins'  The song itself, somewhat of kid...
