Welcome to Season Two of Philly-centric video series, Cover Club. Cover Club is best conceptualized as “A special brand of Philly covers”, akin to The Onion’s AV Undercover series but with one caveat: the song being covered must originally be from a Philly artist.
We started Cover Club as a means to share the diversity and strength of the Philadelphia scene. So when we had a chance to collaborate with Kettle Pot Tracks for a Small Houses session of Cover Club, we jumped at the chance. This session represents a culmination of so many things going right. It goes back to the June 2013 Sofar Sounds: Philadelphia show when I met Small Houses. He had recently done the local On The Hill Sessions for Kettle Pot Tracks, a site that is/was one of the places we would look to find more out about bands from Philly. So when I got a call, last summer from Mike Batchelor of Kettle Pot Tracks, "hey Jeremy Quentin is here recording, do you want to do a Cover Club with him?" there was only one response; "YES!"
It gets even better, Mike already had the location picked out. He wanted to do a remote in Fairmount Park along Wissahickon Creek. Seeing, as this is a few miles from each of our houses, it was an absolute no-brainer. So here we were, with a band I had dug from my favorite house concert series is doing a new recording at my favorite session and my favorite session calls asks to collaborate in essentially my back yard and one of my favorite places in Philadelphia.
Look closely at the video and you can see all the wonderful aspects of the idyllic location: a covered bridge and Forbidden Drive in the background, a babbling Wissahickon Creek, and the most wonderful light on the late August day we recorded. Mike had set up a mobile rig, we grabbed my daughter's red wagon for the equipment, and we took an overly trusting Jeremy Quentin a mile or so into the woods of Philadelphia's Fairmount Park.

Small Houses' Philly cover choice was DRGN King. Jeremy explained "I actually found DRGN King while looking around the 7 inch records at a Philadelphia record shop. "Holy Ghost" was the A-side. Months later, I found myself opening for the band in an odd factory space in Houston, TX. Dom [Angelella] and the gang were such nice guys that I made an effort to attend a few shows at SXSW and in Philadelphia. I'm a sucker for good ole pop music, there's really no other explanation for my attraction towards the band. It's just solid fucking writing."
