Brad Hinton covers Tin Bird Choir "Take Me With You When You Go" for #CoverClub - A special brand of Philly covers

When booking the first session of Cover Club back at Breakneck Studios in October 2013, musician Kevin Killen reminded "You know, we already do this;" referring to Philly Sings Philly.   Done each week in November, Philly Sings Philly, has numerous Philadelphia based artists covering each other on the stage of The Fire!  It must have seemed like more than coincidental when we were able to match up the release schedule of the first set of Cover Club videos with bands playing the celebration of Philly music.  Christopher Davis-Shannon, Kevin Killen, and Chelsea Mitchell each had their Philly-centric covers released and played Philly Sings Philly.

Brad Hinton, folk & country bluesman, the organizer of Philly Sings Philly and subject of the very first Club release (Christopher Davis-Shannon doing "Mourning Dove) was a more than natural choice to include in a future session.  In fact after seeing all the bands either covering Brad Hinton or including Brad in their band at Philly Sings Philly, it was a foregone conclusion that Brad would be doing a future session in any form he chose.  Once the date was set, there was no limitation on who he would play with or who he might cover, he had a promised slot no matter who was playing with him.

Brad plays with so many musicians professionally; it was ironic that playing solo was the plan going into the week of the session.  But like with most Brad Hinton musical arrangements a collaboration ensued.  Katie Frank, who was recording a session at the Sluice Box the same day, with her band the Pheromones, was set to sit in with Brad for the original song.  During the session, although not planned, it soon became a natural match that she would also sit in on the cover.  Tin Bird Choir has beautiful arrangements between husband & wife team, Eric and Heather Hurlock, so it would have been just remiss to cover in any fashion.

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud...

New Chris Kasper single - City By the Sea

Here's a wonderfully bluesy tease to the upcoming Chris Kasper album.   New single "City By The Sea", is just enough to keep fans from getting restless, while he tours with Carsie Blanton along the West Coast.  Hopefully there will be some local dates soon, as 2017 seems so far off right now. Premier Single : Birds Over Arkansas "Forgotten Lights"

Philly/CT band  Birds Over Arkansas ' is currently recording their full length release as a follow up to their 2014  Behind The Lights  EP.  Root Down In The Shadow is proud to debut the first single from this release, "Forgotten Lights." "Forgotten Lights" was first teased in an exclusive release for a RDITS house show in March featuring BOA , Kevin Killen , Chelsea Mitchell , and Max García Conover . Finally ready for the masses, "Forgotten Lights" is helplessly watching a loved one slip away into dementia. The song starts as a mellow Americana groove, and the split at the outro introduces the progressive rock elements to bring in the lyric "the flame blew out again." This was the pivotal point in the lyrics, signifying the change from someone who was slowly losing their faculties who has now seemingly become a different person. The switch from the easy, mellow groove to the frenetic time signature embodies this. Scott Haskitt - ...
