Band Name: Christopher Davis-Shannon

Style : Dance Music for the Old at Heart

Years on the Scene : 3 performing under my own name...a lifetime performing with others such as Lover's League and Bill Haley Jr. and the Comets.

Members : Yours Truly

Any New Album Projects : Currently in the studio hashing out the first of a series of recordings witha full band, with the first bits intended to trickle out this summer with a full length to follow in the fall.

Recent or Most unique Show : So many to choose from, but I think most recently has to be in Auckland. We were about halfway through our second set when a 60 year old man in a leopard print jacket decided he should hop up on the five foot stage and have a dancing contest with me. Life is an odd thing sometimes. He won.

Upcoming Shows : I'm at the Twisted Tail the 13th and 20th next month solo! Also there is the Lover's League CD release on June 26th with Hezekiah Jones, Spinning Leaves, and New Sweden; it's going to be amazing.

Presenting : Ladybird

The ladies of Ladybird (no pun intended) are pretty hard to miss if you're involved in the Philadelphia music scene. The three of them manage to be seen around town with some of the best traditional music groups this fine city has to offer. Since early American music holds a very special place in my heart, I thought it would be appropriate to throw those three in the limelight in anticipation of their forthcoming EP.

So, who is Ladybird?

Laura Szklarski's ambient fingerstyling can be found around Philadelphia under the name Boreal.

Cecilia Ferneborg is the fearless leader of Perseverance Jazz Band. She also lends her fine vocal talents to the Hot Club of Philadelphia and local songwriter Daniel White as a harmony singer.

Sarah Larsen, when not examining and selling fine vintage instruments, can be found around town playing with her bluegrass band The Highwater Preachers, as well as being on call for everyone from Jim Boggia to Ron Gallo to John Flynn. And don't forget CDS!!

How did ladybird get it's wings?

"Ladybird took flight by accident, but it sure was a lovely one. We were all mere acquaintances and decided to gather together for a collective show at Fiume, the legendary West Philly watering hole and speakeasy. We decided to do a few songs together, and it was such a blast that we decided to keep on! This wasn't hard to do; we were offered our next gig two days later!

But the idea behind the project originally was us three gals, with some instruments, some whiskey, and our songs. No boys allowed! It didnt hurt that we quickly all became true sisters. We always have each other's backs, musically and personally. Its a really tight bond we all share."

Next show?  "Our next show is May 30th at Boot and Saddle. We'll be joined by our brothers TJ Kong and Modern Inventors. We're releasing "Hey There, Ladybird!" Its a little EP to share our love of traditional songs. we were honored to have Mike Southerton (Song Dogs, Route 611) steering the project and producing. Plus it was an excuse for Sarah to geek out on tenor guitar. What a dweeb!"

Favorite type of pie? (Trust me, this is a necessary question)
When it comes to pie, we are a band divided. Cecilia loves Strawberry Rhubarb, Laura is a Blueberry girl, and Sarah doesn't care as long as there's a fork handy.

What's in store for Ladybird this summer?  Ladybird's summer is going to be one for the books. We'll be headed to Louisiana and the bayou to record with old-time great Dirk Powell. That record is due out in the fall.

Bands Pick The Bands - 2016 XPoNential Music Festival Presented by Subaru - Artists Preview

Wooo Hooooo It's XPoNential Fest Time!!!!  Every year WXPN brings a ton of great bands and artists to the Wiggins Park shore in Camden, NJ.  With so many bands on the line-up it's daunting to figure out which bands to see.  Fortunately, the way WXPN does the line-ups you CAN make it to every band should you choose.  However, we all know it's going to be hot as hell.  Not quite as hot as 2011 with the 100 degree days, but still super hot.   Luckily for us, some of the festival performers have put in their two cents for which bands they are excited about. Rosemary Fiki   starts the fest at 4pm today on the JerseyArts.Com Marina Stage. Let's see what she's recommending: Band Most Excited to Share the Festival Stage with : This is our first time time performing at XPoNential so to be completely honest, I'm super stoked to share the Festival stage with everyone! If I absolutely had to choose, I would say The Districts. We actually shared the stage wit

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve
