Any new album, projects or sessions in the works? We’ve been working on a new album for a while now. This past winter we started writing some of our darkest/danciest songs yet, and just about a month ago we started tracking. You can hear it around the end of summer.
Most unique show? Most recently, Cafe 49 in Annapolis MD. We had just finished playing a packed out show with Marshall Crenshaw at the Rams Head, and 15min later the booker was leading us out the backdoor, down an alley and in through another back door and pushing us on stage at Cafe 49. She had arranged for us to play ANOTHER show to a packed house. Such a kind, fun, pretty city.
Philly Music Hero: John Mallinen. It;s been nearly 6 years since I’ve seen him play, but the memory of his live shows are really big for me. I was living in Gettysburg at a place called Emmaus, a music venue, thrift store, bowling alley hangout, and John was one of our regular players. I was just learning how to play a guitar back then with the hopes of writing songs, and he inspired me a lot. He has a gentle singing and picking style that can sing you to sleep if you’re not paying attention. There’s not a lot to find online about him, but I’ll send you an mp3 if you email me at jakelewismusic@gmail.com There’s so many other musical heroes from Philly. Levi Landis, Willy Green and the Wishful Thinkers, Chelsea Mitchell and many others.
When can we see your band? This Saturday at the Bryn Mawr Gazebo, for the Philadelphia Folk Festival Showcase with Kalob Griffin Band, and Vulcans.
Come hear four top-notch Philadelphia Music Co-op artists showcase for an opportunity to play at the Philadelphia Folk Festival. While this is not a battle of the bands, a panel of programmers from the Festival will select one (or more) artists for the 2014 event based on each performer's level of craft, performance quality, audience draw, crowd response and more. Come support your favorite act for the chance to send them to the Philadelphia Folk Festival!
"The female folk trio Dirty Dollhouse is the music of singer-songwriter Chelsea Mitchell and vocalists Vanessa Winters (of The Lawsuits) and Amber Twait. The group's signature sound comes from century-spanning influences, simple instrumentation, and layers of harmony. Their debut EP is expected in 2014.
I first met Chelsea at a show we were both playing at the former MilkBoy Coffee in Ardmore, now Melodies Cafe. She opened up with her song ‘Married in the Aviary’ and there was an immediate shift in the room. Everyone was leaning in. Chelsea writes beautiful, honest songs that are magnetic and feely and connecty."
Dirty Dollhouse will be on their biggest showcase yet in less than two weeks, when they play the June Communion Philadelphia Club Night. The lineup also features Jessica Hernandez & The Delta, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Tutlie, and Katie Frank and the Pheromones at Underground Arts on June 5th.
