Ron Gallo / Lucy Stone / Jay Purdy - Boot & Saddle - January 30th 2013

New venue Boot and Saddle has been doing a solid job of attracting some hot new acts such as Those Darlins and Cibo Matto to town.  The venue is set up for long-term success with a good menu and separate areas for the bar and shows.  If they keep bringing stacked local line-ups such as last Thursday, it will quickly be a new favorite for many.

Toy Soldiers front man Ron Gallo had the headline slot for the night and brought friends Lucy Stone and Jay Purdy to fill out his bill.  Fresh off of a release of his solo work Live At Kettle Pot Tracks, Ron Gallo was backed by local boys Satellite Hearts and Levee Drivers multi-instrumentalist Kyle Perella on lap steel.

Jay Purdy started off the night with a captivating solo set, allowing his playful melodies and unexpected lyrics to display a very unique brand of songwriting.  Normally front-man of The Extraordinaires, Jay seemed at ease on his own while switching back and forth between whimsical tunes on Rhodes & guitar.

Lucy Stone took the stage next with her band featuring longtime friend and current Levee Driver Ben Plotnick on bass.  Listening to Lucy Stone albums, one might have expected a pop-heavy with some solo songs à la Ingrid Michaelson.  However, for her live show with partners in crime Sean Donaghy on drums and Isaac Louis on electric guitar, she dispelled any misconceptions and came ready to rock.

For her six song set, Lucy Stone played mostly originals.  'Youth' by Daughter was an excellent and well-suited cover staying heavy on guitar with the pounding drum & bass.  Her solid performance, especially unreleased song, 'Ten Below,' left the crowd with high expectations for new works expected later this spring.

Turning a complete 180 from the just released Kettle Pot Tracks an album of solo acoustic songs, Gallo & company started with guns blazing.  The set started with a 'Messy MaryAnne' version that included a Kyle Perella lap steel solo.  The new Ron original ran right into 'Started A War'.

Overall, the set served to showcase the many sides of Ron Gallo, from thoughtful singer-songwriter to in-your-face frontman.  Even concert-goers of the shortest attention span can't help but be glued to that kind of onstage magnetism and unpredictable nature.   The sensative crooning of  'If You Gotta Know',
contrasted the bouncy Paul Simon-esque vibe of 'Leaving Season,'  and every quiet moment was answered by what fans have come to expect: good ol' musical debauchery.   Ron's signature cover of Harry Nilsson went Honkey-Tonk, 'Fine Diners and Finer Whiners' forced the question of "what if Jerry Lee Lewis went electric", and 'If You Ever Come Back' -with a surprise Soprano sax solo - was dedicated to Leon Redbone.  The band was having so much fun, they pulled off a fantastic version of "ChrisTina" Turner's 'What's Love Got To Do With It' and showed what it would sound like if the Doors had made Christmas music with a lovely "Snow baby Snow" rendition of 'Roadhouse'.

Bands Pick The Bands - 2016 XPoNential Music Festival Presented by Subaru - Artists Preview

Wooo Hooooo It's XPoNential Fest Time!!!!  Every year WXPN brings a ton of great bands and artists to the Wiggins Park shore in Camden, NJ.  With so many bands on the line-up it's daunting to figure out which bands to see.  Fortunately, the way WXPN does the line-ups you CAN make it to every band should you choose.  However, we all know it's going to be hot as hell.  Not quite as hot as 2011 with the 100 degree days, but still super hot.   Luckily for us, some of the festival performers have put in their two cents for which bands they are excited about. Rosemary Fiki   starts the fest at 4pm today on the JerseyArts.Com Marina Stage. Let's see what she's recommending: Band Most Excited to Share the Festival Stage with : This is our first time time performing at XPoNential so to be completely honest, I'm super stoked to share the Festival stage with everyone! If I absolutely had to choose, I would say The Districts. We actually shared the stage wit

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve
