Earlier this year here at the indie Philly blog, Root Down In The Shadow, we started the fun series #Philly Presents,
...bands writing about other bands. The most common reaction from
bands to this project: "Wait? Are we covering other bands?" And so
#CoverClub was born!
The final Nomad Studios Session 1.0 band for the #CoverClub series are the hardworking fellas from West Philadelphia, none other than the Fleeting Ends! When the series was in the planning stages, it was clear that these energetic dudes had to be involved. Seeing them back in August, at the Sofar Sounds: Philadelphia show, I realized that if their live show was such a close reproduction to their album intensity, then they would also be incredible for a studio session. Turns out, instincts were correct and these guys brought their A game. Never even considering a stripped down session, the Fleeting Ends came to Nomad Recording Studio ready to rock out.
The Fleeting Ends selection 'Tried and True' is from Ween's 2003 album Quebec. With their boyish good looks, it was a little puzzling at first why Ween would be in the radar for them, but in fact Ween made an impression on them early on.
"Ween has been with us for so long we can't remember when it was we got into them. It was definitely a young age. Goofy songs like 'Mister, Would You Please Help My Pony?' and 'Waving My Dick In The Wind' immediately caught our attention along with more serious songs like 'I Don't Want It' and 'The Mollusk'. Ween expressed freedom in every song and showed no fear. They are truly original. We feel privileged to have been able to experience them and their songwriting."
As far as why 'Tried and True'; "We picked Tried and True as our cover only because it's a song we periodically learned through messing around at practice over the years. It feels very natural playing
the song. We're happy to be able to do something with it and show our respect for Ween."
