Chelsea Mitchell covers the Lawsuits 'Fine Quality (Coffee Flour Sugar Tea) / #CoverClub a special brand of Philly covers
Earlier this year here at the indie Philly blog, Root Down In The Shadow, we started the fun series #Philly Presents, ...bands writing about other bands. The most common reaction from bands to this project: "Wait? Are we covering other bands?" And so #CoverClub was born!
On November 11th, we premiered Cover Club, "A special brand of Philly covers". The bands will typically be Philly bands covering other Philly bands, but in some cases like Joe Fletcher, we could be including a national act in the rotation as well. These covers could be old school Philly, current Philly, anything Philly related. Each Monday we will release a cover, with an original from the session being released on the Wednesday of the same week!
The third installment of #CoverClub features Chelsea Mitchell, covering The Lawsuits' "Fine Quality (Coffee Flour Sugar Tea)". Before scrolling down to the video, be sure to check out the details on the song and the cover!
Sometimes a special song is made with barely a notice. A band could break up, it misses the cut, or for some reason it just didn't work. 'Fine Quality (Coffee Flour Sugar Tea)' didn't have its fate defined by those situations, but it still seems to have been lost in the shuffle. The Lawsuits put out two EP's in 2012 (Hot Love and Numbers) with the big focus on the LP (Cool Cool Cool) that was to come out in 2013!
A victim of Brian Strouse's tragic affliction of writing too many incredible songs, 'Fine Quality' got left behind. Even though it was only on a six track EP, the peppier tracks, 'Ebony Rose' and 'Trying to Forget You', overshadowed the delicate love song.
Perhaps it unconsciously gets missed because it expresses such sad feelings. Listen closely to the lyrics as Brian sings, between the quivers in his voice and the parts where it's barely a whisper ("with a smoke, outside in the pouring rain") it's almost as if you're standing next to him as he found out the love of his life just broke up with him. The emotion in his voice is startling and you really want to go give Brian a hug to stop his pain!

With Cool Cool Cool, receiving such a warm reception, The Lawsuits will be playing tracks from Numbers less and less. However, Chelsea Mitchell's #CoverClub re-work of "Fine Quality"should ensure that it won't be forgotten. She quickly leaves the sad softness of the song behind and lets her powerful vocals take over. Chelsea adds boldness where Brian Strouse went to a whisper. She adds complementary oohs in all the right places, where Brian let lyrical omissions do the work. Lastly, where Brian's vocals seemed to be falling apart as his heart broke, Chelsea adds the harmonica so you have no doubt but to acknowledge the heartfelt blues!
Heartbroken or not, Chelsea Mitchell's version of 'Fine Quality' is a must-hear.
It's doubtful that this will be the last cover of The Lawsuits song in this #CoverClub series. In fact, rumors are there is one in each of the next two rounds of recordings!
