Daytrotter - #Philly Edition

In early 2011, I was excited for the release of the Iron & Wine album Kiss Each Other Clean.  I had been keeping an eye on their website for details of shows and maybe a free single.  At the time, the depth of what you could find on the internet for music was burgeoning.  The fans had spoken and wanted more music, but the free-for-all that was Napster, etc was over.   With Kiss Each Other Clean, something happened, that I had never experienced before.  All the promo stuff that happened previously city by city, limited to local fans at record stores and radio stations, this now was out on the web for all to see.  There were many session from stations across the country.  Included in this promotional explosion was a video session at Daytrotter.com!

Here it was a Daytrotter session in video form.

Iron & Wine pre-Kiss Each Other Clean  - Jan 12, 2011: Daytrotter Studio, Rock Island, IL

This was and still is a beautiful piece of recording.  I was darn curious what was happening with Daytrotter?  Now years back I had experienced a Daytrotter session, but it was in the form of EP I bought of Erin McKeown.  I didn't know this was something I had could have access too!  I didn't know there were more sessions!  By April, I had succumbed to curiosity and initiated my Daytrotter.com membership.  At the time it was a meager $2 a month and started downloading!

It was as exhilarating as the first time I used Napster back in the day.  However, this wasn't the crap shoot of good or bad files.  These were sessions recorded in a pure form, showcasing the artists as only the Daytrotter peeps could.  My initial download spree was a jackpot; Sean Hayes, Lisa Hannigan, Iron & Wine, Local Natives, Pokey LaFarge, The Low Anthem, Avett Brothers, Béla Fleck, Blind Pilot, Blitzen Trapper, Cage the Elephant, David Wax Museum, Death Cab for Cutie, First Aid Kit, and Freelance Whales!  For a music fan, this was the mother load!

These sessions were great.  Not some crappy radio station session for some one hit wonder, but hard working touring bands taking a break while trekking across this great country, stopping in Iowa (or down the road in Illinois) for a recording!

Soon enough I was preparing for the 2011 festivals and concert previews, and Daytrotter was now going to be my go to source to verify whether a band was going to be good live.  Singles be damned, could they handle Daytrotter?   The Devil Makes Three, Anaïs Mitchell, Deer Tick, Pearl And The Beard, Shovels & Rope, J. Roddy Walston, Honeyhoney, and Kopecky Family Band all passed the test!!

When I started covering Philly as my main focus, there were some Philly bands in the archives with national acts, like G Love and Dr. Dog, plus some other local Philly with Juston Stens and the Get Real Gang, Low Cut Connie or Hoots and Hellmouth. It's only recently that Philly has made its major mark on Daytrotter.  All in the last few months, DRGN King, Norwegian Arms, the Lawsuits, and Toy Soldiers all joined the ranks of succesful session makers!

Here's a look back at these recent #Philly Daytrotter sessions recorded (most recent first):

Toy Soldiers - Released Oct 14, 2013

The Toy Soldiers brought their rowdy rock to Rock Island, IL to record their Daytrotter session.  Featuring songs from the recently released The Maybe Boys.  'Tell The Teller' and 'Heart In A Mousetrap' are standard versions, however 'Tomorrow For Today' has a chill Ron Gallo intro before Matt Kelly's rollicking guitar and Luke Leidy's lively organ parts start.  'Red Dress' is a clear favorite: the band is exuberant on all fronts, vocals, bass, all of the above!

Norwegian Arms - Released Sep 23, 2013

Not familiar with Norwegian Arms?  Think dude Tune-Yards.  Now you're at least close to what Norwegian Arms sounds like.  Next download this session and find out for sure.

Staccato vocals and euphoric use of the ukulele are what you might find!  The session features 'Jitterbug' from the upcoming  Jitterbug b/w The Iceman/Kiva Ikva single, and tunes from the 2013 release Wolf Like A Stray Dog.  'Soviet Bicycle' is pretty close to the album but just missing some studio layering.  Believe it or not, the session is spot on for a live Norwegian Arms experience.

The Lawsuits Released  Sep 11, 2013

The Daytrotter session for the Lawsuits is a "best of" for their recent work.  Four songs from the brand new Cool Cool Cool and 'Fine Quality' from the early 2013 EP Numbers made the cut!  The session shows off more of Brian Dale Allen Strouse's vocals than the album, but its Vanessa Winters stealing the show.  Her vocals on 'You Won't Love Me If You Don't' are prime example of the magic in a bottle that you experience at their live shows.  As a Daytrotter session authority (self-proclaimed), her vocal works are the best on any session in 2013!  No listen is complete without hearing the fun 'Dreaming #26'

DRGN King - Released Jul 23, 2013

Raw, energetic, enigmatic?  DRGN King is all of the above.  Alt-Nation wunderkinds knocking on the door to stardom, DRGN King, brought two of their crazy talented hits to their Daytrotter session with  'Warriors' and 'Holy Ghost' plus bonus tracks 'Undertow' and an 'Untitled'!  'Holy Ghost' perfectly captures what you'll expect from the band live.  You instantly feel like you're listening to a buddy's band with Dominic's endearing charm.  But you step away knowing you just experienced the beginnings of something huge!

Bands Pick The Bands - 2016 XPoNential Music Festival Presented by Subaru - Artists Preview

Wooo Hooooo It's XPoNential Fest Time!!!!  Every year WXPN brings a ton of great bands and artists to the Wiggins Park shore in Camden, NJ.  With so many bands on the line-up it's daunting to figure out which bands to see.  Fortunately, the way WXPN does the line-ups you CAN make it to every band should you choose.  However, we all know it's going to be hot as hell.  Not quite as hot as 2011 with the 100 degree days, but still super hot.   Luckily for us, some of the festival performers have put in their two cents for which bands they are excited about. Rosemary Fiki   starts the fest at 4pm today on the JerseyArts.Com Marina Stage. Let's see what she's recommending: Band Most Excited to Share the Festival Stage with : This is our first time time performing at XPoNential so to be completely honest, I'm super stoked to share the Festival stage with everyone! If I absolutely had to choose, I would say The Districts. We actually shared the stage wit

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve
