Catching up with Chelsea Mitchell

From time to time, there comes a need to bring fans up to speed with all the goings on with a band.  Hence the "Catching Up With...." series here at Root Down In The Shadow

American Songwriter
Lyric Contest :  September/October 2013

1st Place  “She May Never See Paris”          Debra Wolf Goldstein  Philadelphia, Pennsylvania  Lyrics
2nd Place “Nobody’s Daughter”                   Chelsea Mitchell           Philadelphia, Pennsylvania  Lyrics
3rd Place “You Must Be Out Of My Mind” Mark Rowe                    Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada Lyrics
4th Place “Can’t Afford To Let It Go”          Matt Jordan                  Glencoe, Missouri                 Lyrics

Chelsea Mitchell placed 2nd in the lyric contest for American Songwriter magazine.  Surprisingly she revealed 'Nobody's Daughter' was her first entry into a lyrics contest of any kind.  "It's one of those things where you think I might not have a real shot, but somebody's gotta win, right?"

Win or lose, she's a real sweetheart!  She admitted that she entered trying to win a new Gibson for her boyfriend.

If you see Chelsea between now and her October 4th show at Johnny Brenda's, opening for Kalob Griffin Band and Driftwood, she's  still to be still reeling.  "When I first saw a physical copy of this month's American Songwriter, I couldn't stop smiling.  It's nice to feel like you're doing something right every now and then."

For winning 2nd place in the contest, AS printed the full lyrics to 'Nobody's Daughter' with Chelsea's name and hometown.  "They also put my lyrics up on americansongwriter.com, so even if you're not a subscriber you can still check it out!"

Here's an excerpt of the lyrics from Chelsea Mitchell's 'Nobody's Daughter' from Married In The Aviary.

"You can take me to the river
You can bathe me in the water
You can pray all the words that you heard from the minister
But I ain’t nobody’s daughter"

A pic from the numbering phase, while making her new album Married In The Aviary

 Dirty Dollhouse

Video Shoot

Chelsea Mitchell, Amber Twait, and Vanessa Winters as Dirty Dollhouse singing "Nobody's Daughter" written by Chelsea Mitchell.
A capella intro recorded and produced at The Attic by Peter Joseph.
Filmed in Fishtown's Historic Palmer Cemetery by RGB Video Productions.

After seeing this video and catching the pictures from the video shoot, Root Down In The Shadow sought out more about this eye and ear candy, and got the scoop!

Root Down In The Shadow: What is Dirty Dollhouse?  From the video above, it seems like solo Chelsea Mitchell flushed out with extra beauty, looks & sounds.  Is there any original Dirty Dollhouse material?  What makes this different than the full band on your current release Married In The Aviary

Chelsea Mitchell: "Yes, they are babes, and yes, we do a lot of songs that are part of my solo catalog, but Dirty Dollhouse has really changed how I approach writing. Whenever I sit down with my guitar or my uke, I hear 3 voices singing. I think about what would work as a solo song versus a trio song, or if it can be both. Songwriting has always been so personal and cathartic for me, but now I've begun to think about other people's stories and writing songs that are better suited for Vanessa or Amber to take the lead on. Dirty Dollhouse has been a very inspirational project that has me writing new songs every day.

Root Down: How did this start out?

Chelsea Mitchell: Actually, Dirty Dollhouse was born from 'Nobody's Daughter' in June of 2012. I was messing around with that song for about a month before it became a fully realized piece, and when it was done I knew it needed some harmony.  I recorded all the parts on my laptop and was pretty pleased, but the unfortunate thing about being a solo singer-songwriter is only having one set of vocal chords for live shows.  I had a gig coming up at The Fire, so I asked two of the best singers I know to join me for "Nobody's Daughter."  I had seen Vanessa Winters sing with The Lawsuits a bunch of times and knew she'd be perfect for the project - excellent pitch and control with a big range. Amber Twait has a really classic Nashville voice - you won't hear a better version of "Jolene" than hers.  I thought her rich, low tones would be great to fill out the sound.  So I showed them the song.  Vanessa took the high harmony, Amber took the low.  We got a really positive reaction from the crowd and I knew we'd made something special.  They both have such unique, beautiful voices and I love "working" with them.  I use the term "work" lightly, because we're all goofballs and we spend a lot of practice time laughing at each other.
Root Down In The Shadow: Married In The Aviary was released in June, but already new material is surfacing.  What can we expect for 'White Knuckle Drive' or other new stuff?
Chelsea Mitchell: I'm doing my best to play a new song at every gig for the rest of 2013 and I'm REALLY excited for "Old Fires (Light 'Em Up), a song I'll be debuting at Johnny Brenda's on October 4th. It features Dirty Dollhouse and the incredible John Hildenbrand of The Kalob Griffin Band. I've got a good feeling about this one!

Briar Patch Session

Chelsea Mitchell - Shake All Over from SotSProductions on Vimeo.

Chelsea also gave Root Down In The Shadow the scoop on this video session with Briar Patch:  "This summer, I hit the road with Levee Drivers in July and we did a little southern loop: Knoxville for two WDVX radio shows, then The Basement in Nashville, Jack of the Wood in Asheville, NC, and finally The Purple Fiddle in Thomas, West Virginia. It was such a smooth, successful trip - almost to the point of disbelief. I'm used to the car trouble/shady booker/venue mix-up/golf-ball-sized hail type of tour.

While visiting Asheville, Chelsea Mitchell had the opportunity to capture her new song 'Shake All Over' with Briar Patch Productions.  To make it an extra special performance, she invited Levee Drivers to join her: "I mostly play my original music solo, but Kyle Perella and August John Lutz II helped out on a few songs for the radio show. They're the kind of musicians who can do anything, so it was no big deal to spend one night learning my music in our hotel room.  They nailed it."

Bands Pick The Bands - 2016 XPoNential Music Festival Presented by Subaru - Artists Preview

Wooo Hooooo It's XPoNential Fest Time!!!!  Every year WXPN brings a ton of great bands and artists to the Wiggins Park shore in Camden, NJ.  With so many bands on the line-up it's daunting to figure out which bands to see.  Fortunately, the way WXPN does the line-ups you CAN make it to every band should you choose.  However, we all know it's going to be hot as hell.  Not quite as hot as 2011 with the 100 degree days, but still super hot.   Luckily for us, some of the festival performers have put in their two cents for which bands they are excited about. Rosemary Fiki   starts the fest at 4pm today on the JerseyArts.Com Marina Stage. Let's see what she's recommending: Band Most Excited to Share the Festival Stage with : This is our first time time performing at XPoNential so to be completely honest, I'm super stoked to share the Festival stage with everyone! If I absolutely had to choose, I would say The Districts. We actually shared the stage wit

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve
