Part of the ongoing series of 'Molly Songs': a weekly look featuring
songs that our children will love, but more importantly parents can
enjoy as well.
Molly & I got two very important presents over the winter holidays. She picked up a cool ukulele and I got a DVD of Nirvana MTV Unplugged. Together we've spent many hours watching the DVD as she is constantly deciding which her favorite is, trying to remember who we can go see live and who we can't, and learning as much as she can about her favorite grunge band. So far the other Curt and his brother Chris Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets are her favorites.
The Nirvana MTV Unplugged DVD is a great reminder of what music to listen to with your kids. You don't want crap that is easy the first time, just because that's "what kids will like". Good music is really worth the time and effort if it piques their interests. It took skipping to 'Lake of Fire' and 'Plateau' to get her intrigued, but she was soon hooked on the whole set. Our dialog was flung wide open, talking about death, rabid dogs, and all sorts of things while starting to understand these lyrics.
In the weeks after getting this DVD, she treated me to two surprises. First, we went to the record store where she asked for her copy of the Nirvana MTV Unplugged album. After we found that and her typical session of listening to the albums via the listening stations at Main Street Music, she asked for the Beatles. How could I say no?
The other treat was this impromptu performance once morning waking my wife & me up. With no practice or prompting she reeled off this wonderful Nirvana Unplugged Performance. I hope you enjoy. Forgive her for her interpretations of the lyrics. And for those keeping score, that's a Kingsley Flood T-Shirt she bogarted from the wife.
After watching the video, I'm guessing you'll have no doubts she really does like Nirvana.
Thanks to contributor and friend Jeff Coon for cleaning up the video and prepping it for post!
