For those of you that don't know what Sofar Sounds is here's their story:

"We have created a movement which brings music lovers together in secret living room locations to hear some of the world's most cutting edge artists."

The first month I got involved with Sofar, I was impressed by how exciting things were, how intimate it was. During the second event, it became clear to me that I was not alone in this recognition. Fans were back, previous artists were in attendance, we were all waiting for magic to happen.
The historic 10th show for the Philadelphia team was a culmination of all the great things learned from the previous shows. Even with two returning bands and the showcase itself being at the same West Philly row home that recently hosted the fabulous January show, every step of the night felt new and amazing. "New" was a theme, whether it a new yet to be titled song, new style (Spoken Word) for most fans, or an new artist breaking into Philly from other parts of the country.

SEPTEMBER CALL-UP - Philadelphia, PA

The chaotic buzz from friends and fresh faces arriving was palpable.  The din encompassing the space was quickly muted as September Call-Up's Christian Bitto took the floor for a solo set.  His quiet Bright Eyes style and humble spirit easily silenced the room.

The emotional, unsettled lyrics gave great counter to the restful acoustic guitar. The hushed tone was a risk, easily taken on the Sofar Sounds crowd. Christian has it down knowing how to draw you in; similar to the first time you'd hear the whispers of Sam Beam vocals on early Iron & Wine.

ALRIGHT, JUNIOR - Philadelphia, PA

After a ten second tune-up, 2/3 of Alright, Junior took up shop on two chairs in the living room.  They started off with their most recent single 'How You've Changed Me' before continuing on with a set list on the fly of new material.  The powerful acoustic songs were reminiscent of a Chris Cornell from his Radio Stockholm performance.  Similarly the duo captured the power and breadth of the full songs while arousing each person in the crowd that Christian Bitto carefully sedated.

CHRISTOPHER K.P. BROWN - Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia's Spoken Word star, Christopher K.P. Brown brought many in the crowd their first Spoken Word performance.  KP was masterful with his prose, bringing the crowd along for conversations with his Grand Mother on 'Whole Foods' and his fellow poets on '(Tell Hip Hop) I still Love H.E.R.'

He summarized full theses worth of thoughts on modern culture, wrapped up neatly in four minute segments.  The new 'Death vs. Destiny' succinctly exposed the perspective of a young teenage minority, while taking a Kanye West lyric ("jokes on you we still alive") and transposing it to his conclusion ("the jokes on us we actually made it past 25").

"My best friend Walter got killed my first semester in college, while I was chalking outlines of future papers.  His future got outlined in chalk over some papers"
'Death vs. Destiny'

He weaved stories before the poems and inside the poems.  Before his final 'Remember Me' Christopher K.P. Brown re-hashed a touching revelation that he started writing the year his mom started showing signs of Alzheimer's, then within the lyrics he spoke of his regret in shrinking away from family while his mother's mental status shrunk away.

Kingsley Flood - Boston, MA

The final stop on the adventure ride that was Sofar Sounds: Philadelphia - April, was Boston band Kingsley Flood.   In the midst of their own adventure that, in a few short days, has taken them from the popular 9:30 Club in DC via a mansion in Maryland to a living room in West Philly.  In the next few months it will also take them to the Sellersville Theater, World Cafe Live - Wilmington and to the illustrious Newport Folk Festival.

Kingsley Flood pulled out all the stops for this show, getting an extra special long set for the house show.  They played a sampling of songs from all three of their albums, including the newly release Battles.  The set started off with Naseem Khuri on acoustic guitar capturing the crowd in a moment of "pin-drop quiet" before the band erupted simultaneously after the first verse of 'Wonderland'.   Erupted they did with George Hall plugged in, Chris Barrett rocking out on both keyboards and trumpet, Nick Balkin's groovy bass line, Travis Richter letting loose on the drums, and Jenée Morgan on the violin.   They even played their token "country song", where Jenée Morgan's violin suddenly became a fiddle.

What Sofar Sounds: Philadelphia was able to pull off was just short of fantastic.  Ranging from hushed to rousing with hints of rap and country mixed amongst the rock, folk and spoken word; the variety was tremendous.  Excitement for what will come next from these performers is hard to contain.  Two acts have new albums released and two currently in the works.  All have upcoming release shows.

Excitement also reigns for Sofar Sounds: Philadelphia - May 2013!  Sign up for more news!

Bands Pick The Bands - 2016 XPoNential Music Festival Presented by Subaru - Artists Preview

Wooo Hooooo It's XPoNential Fest Time!!!!  Every year WXPN brings a ton of great bands and artists to the Wiggins Park shore in Camden, NJ.  With so many bands on the line-up it's daunting to figure out which bands to see.  Fortunately, the way WXPN does the line-ups you CAN make it to every band should you choose.  However, we all know it's going to be hot as hell.  Not quite as hot as 2011 with the 100 degree days, but still super hot.   Luckily for us, some of the festival performers have put in their two cents for which bands they are excited about. Rosemary Fiki   starts the fest at 4pm today on the JerseyArts.Com Marina Stage. Let's see what she's recommending: Band Most Excited to Share the Festival Stage with : This is our first time time performing at XPoNential so to be completely honest, I'm super stoked to share the Festival stage with everyone! If I absolutely had to choose, I would say The Districts. We actually shared the stage wit

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve
