Concert Review - Song Dogs / The Bailey Hounds / Keil Everett/Tin Horses / Country Mice at North Star Bar, March 22nd, 2013

When I saw the lineup announced for the recent Country Mice show at North Star Bar, I had to go.  First a national Indie band I kinda dug, two local bands I really wanted to see live, and a local musician that suddenly was in my radar.   I had to go, it was a must see.  Despite a crappy experience the last time I went to North Star, and despite a complete fail on my part the last time I tried to see the Song Dogs, I had to go.  If it took going early just to get a parking spot, so be it, it was going to happen.  I had to see this show!  Seriously how often do you get four acts out of four that you want to see?

Aaron Chiazza - Drums

First up was Kiel Everett.  Kiel was originally set to be solo that night, due to a lack of drummer.  Things fell into place for the night with Aaron Chiazza playing with them.  Kiel still stuck to the marquee and played the first two songs solo.  The second song 'Wild Hope' had a Woody Guthrie kinda of Americana feel to it.  I was totally surprised seeing that as my only taste of Kiel Everett, prior to this show was him being the bassist of Purling Hiss, the Philly, Lo-Fi Indie Psych rock band.  However as the set progressed, each track turned it up one more notch.  At the end of the set, 'Dead Horse' was a full-on rocking out with a complete instrumental ending to the song.

Almost all of the tracks were from the March release A Life of Trouble.  After this show, A Life of Trouble is definitely on my wish list but, at this point, the album is only available to stream on Bandcamp.com.

When will the album will be ready for purchase?  According to Kiel Everett, "we are working on doing a limited handmade run of A life of Trouble now. We hope to have that done within the next month."   With Purling Hiss, hitting the road this week, that could be tough to balance making discs while touring.  However, it's good news for Kiel Everett fans, as "I usually get a lot of my writing done for Tin Horses on the road. I pretty much wrote all the songs for our newest album when I was on tour."

Kiel Everett
As far as what's next for recording. "I just started recording some of my acoustic material; I'm not sure what it will become. Maybe a solo album, maybe the next Tin Horses album, but I hope to finish in June. I will be setting up more solo acoustic sets in between Purling Hiss tours."

Ryan Petrillo | Vocals, Guitar, Harmonica, & Organ
Gary Lebiedzinski | Drums & Percussion
Vince Federici | Electric Guitar
Chris Cardillo | Bass

The Bailey Hounds were next.  The Philadelphia, four piece quickly drew in the Friday night crowd.  For those unfamiliar, this Philly band is similar to a mix of the Cave Singers and Pittsburgh's Bill Deasy add in a little more rasp and excitement of Lucero or Driver By Truckers, and a lyrical bend on the ghastly themes, the kind of the introspection of a murderer would have.  Sounding a little more raspy than their album Along the Gallows, they impressed with chill and bluesy tunes from their debut with new material.

Deathly, but terrific songs filled the set including, 'Dead and Gone', 'Those Devils Don't Scare Me' and 'Hell Ain't Forever'.  The latter has the fun sample of their no nonsense look at killing others; "Murder ain't nothing, I'm just cleaning out".  The murder-folk set capper, 'Book of Pagan Rituals' was the highlight with Vince Federici thrashing away on a Pink Floyd type build up meshing into a Cave Singer No Witch type rocker!

With a few songs left, Ryan Petrillo sarcastically commented to the somewhat talkative crowd that he was "not sure I want to hear 15-20 minutes more".  I know I was annoyed with the crowd, but nothing stopped the Bailey Hounds from rocking away.  Me personally, I'm looking forward to the next show for the Bailey Hounds, and getting my hands on the new material.

Expected in May, a six-song album entitled All the Blood in the World is in the works and will include 'Late Demon Rum', 'Book of Pagan Rituals' ''Dead & Gone', and 'The Murder Song'.  The song "Even if the Tide" (working title) is a brand new song we wrote a couple weeks ago and could potentially be on their next LP.

"All the Blood in the World is in the final process of getting mastered and we should have a single out in April. We're planning on releasing the album to the public in May and our official Record Release Show will be in July at Johnny Brenda's. This album differs from Along the Gallows in that we took a much grittier, analog approach, focusing on creating an album that was more indicative of our live performance. It is more horror-driven and introspective than Along the Gallows, which I've always viewed as a bit more sentimental and melancholy in scope.  "Murder, decadence, misanthropy, and abjection seem to be overarching themes upon first listen...so, it's a real pick-me-up."

As for upcoming shows:
Friday, May 24th: The Bailey Hounds at Philadelphia's Magic Gardens on South Street
Saturday, June 8th: The Bailey Hounds at Laurel Hill Cemetery (2nd Annual)

Song Dogs were third on the bill, and it soon became clear that the crowd was a Song Dogs crowd.  The Philly newcomers started off with the new 'You Are My Rock' for the very receptive crowd.  Folk with lyric, but classic rock by sound, they made it clear there was a new player in town.

They gave the crowd the full Song Dogs treatment as they continued to play a few songs from their deeper recesses of the Song Dog catalog, before slowing it down a tad for favorite "Buffalo Crossroads'.

Ryan McCloskey tore it up on guitar during the introspective 'Wild Country', matching the passion of Mike Southerton's lyrics and vocals.   The guitar stayed heavy and Dan Cooper tore up the drums for another Wild Country track, the power ballad 'Wrong Side of the Town' showcasing the whole band jamming away.

A Live album might really be necessary as I was not prepared for how much these guys rocked.  I was severely disappointed I didn't get to stick around for them at their release show at the Grape Room, a month or so back.

Country Mice

Indie rockers, Country Mice, came out last to headline the show. Straight from Durham, NC to the show with some bonus DC traffic thrown in, they were ready to pull out all the shops for the tour ending show. I had been familiar with a few singles from their 2011 release Twister. I have to admit, I totally overlooked their rock-out jam quotient on 'Country Mice', it should have been obvious after 'Festival' but I was oblivious. After this completely full-on psychedelic set, I was set straight. It was as if they played every crazy lead in and solo they had ever practiced, just leaving no riff un-played, at some points devolving into an all-out wail-fest. Even the cover they slipped in was off the charts, including a Sinatra, 'It Was a Very Good Year'.

Bands Pick The Bands - 2016 XPoNential Music Festival Presented by Subaru - Artists Preview

Wooo Hooooo It's XPoNential Fest Time!!!!  Every year WXPN brings a ton of great bands and artists to the Wiggins Park shore in Camden, NJ.  With so many bands on the line-up it's daunting to figure out which bands to see.  Fortunately, the way WXPN does the line-ups you CAN make it to every band should you choose.  However, we all know it's going to be hot as hell.  Not quite as hot as 2011 with the 100 degree days, but still super hot.   Luckily for us, some of the festival performers have put in their two cents for which bands they are excited about. Rosemary Fiki   starts the fest at 4pm today on the JerseyArts.Com Marina Stage. Let's see what she's recommending: Band Most Excited to Share the Festival Stage with : This is our first time time performing at XPoNential so to be completely honest, I'm super stoked to share the Festival stage with everyone! If I absolutely had to choose, I would say The Districts. We actually shared the stage wit

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve
