Weekend Review - Lawsuits, Tri State Indie Awards, & The Gallerist

What a great weekend of music.   I can honestly say there are few places that have such a multifaceted multi-genre scene as the Philly area.  You can really pick from an a la cart menu of bands and venues and not be disappointed.  This weekend for Root Down In The Shadow, included a Friday night show at Maxwell's on Main in Doylestown, the Tri State Indie Awards, and a mixed bag at Kung Fu Necktie.

THE LAWSUITS TAKE-OVER with JEREMIAH TALL ║

Buck's county superstars The Lawsuits were the pick to start off the weekend.  The cover was FREE, but the quality was great.  Jeremiah Tall brought his one man extravaganza to open the night.  (Can you even call it that, when they don't go on until 10-ish?).  The Lawsuits, deep in their home territory, played a good selection of new tracks including the popular 'Ten Cent Piece'.

TSI MUSIC AWARDS (the pre party) On Sunday, Tri State Indie Music Awards.  At 3pm Upstairs at World Cafe Live, the days festivities started off.  Another Bucks county artist, Aaron Brown of Aaron & The Spell kicked off the awesome day.

Despite having the unlucky draw of having the first slot at the pre-show, Aaron Brown did fantastically.  The crowd emerged as he started, arriving early for the promise of free Starr Hill brews, but were drawn in and impressed by his unassuming sound.

Kuf Knotz was next and laid down an impressive set.  Despite the overwhelming representation by rock, indie, and folk bands and fans, the New York by way of Bryn Mawr, Hip Hop artist kept the busy crowds attention.

Philadelphia regulars The Lawsuits played a 5 song set with 'Ebony Rose' from Numbers and new music including the soon-to-be-a-hit-if-they-ever-release-it 'French Toast'!

Tri State Indie Music Awards 2013!!!

Somewhere around 5pm, the crowd made its way to the main event down stairs at World Cafe Live.  The pre-show bands were all relaxed and ready for the party, but others were nervous as near everyone was involved in the presentations, the nominations and performances.  Overall the night was a blast.  There was the expected pomp and circumstance, but also filled with plenty of surprises!  The performers bookended by the Ron Gallo Super Group, all did a great job!

The crowning moment, was the realization by near everyone in the crowd, what Rock Stars the Levee Drivers had become.  August John Lutz II and Kyle Perella were joined by pals Josh Friedman on the drums for the set and Luke Leidy for a few.  August laid it all out doing his best Johnny Cash meets Glenn Danzig, while just exuding his buddy down the street charm!

The night itself was such a fantastic achievement for Tri State Indie and the local scene.  Everyone came to the event with a favorite and someone they wanted to see.  I'm ready for more Turning Violet Violet and New Sweden, but all the fans left with more bands to check out kicking off the momentum for another great year and Awards 3.0!!

Tan Vampires, Old Abram Brown, The Gallerist, & The Sun Flights @Kung Fu Necktie Tuesday night, I went out to get a better glimpse of now locals, The Gallerist at Kung Fu Necktie!  They were on the line up with another local duo Sun Flight and two out of towners; Tan Vampires and Old Abram Brown

I was able to catch most of the set from openers Sun Flight.  Although I only started listening to the band the morning of, I felt they were better live with a First Aid Kit style and sound with a two piece dynamic.  The highlights of their set were 'Whisper the wind' and the ironic 'I am a Robot'.   I'd like to see them perform again, but I'm cautious of seeing them in a place that will swallow up their sound.

Check out their recommended "On The Hill Series"

The Gallerist @ Kung Fu Necktie 2-19-13

Set List -                                Album or Origin
1. 'Songbird'                           A Falling Waltz
2. 'Crumbs'                             A Falling Waltz
3. 'Washed Away'                   A Falling Waltz
4. 'Helium'                                ** new**    (featured via SoFarSounds recent house show)
5. 'Yesterday's News Today'   A Falling Waltz (revised)
6. 'Falling Waltz'                  A Falling Waltz
7. 'Old Skin'                              ** new ** (featured via SoFarSounds recent house show)

I had only heard The Gallerist once before at a recent SoFarSounds Philadelphia house show, and it was a intriguing enough, that I've been stalking Mike Collins of The Gallerist ever since.   I was a little surprise by how plugged in the show was, but it worked very well.   The banjo & electric bass combo on 'Helium' was a great match.  The crowd also really enjoyed the fully plugged in 'Old Skin', but my favorite was the harmonica and plugged in guitar on a heavy, bluesy 'Falling Waltz'!

I'll be keeping an eye out for more listings.  Two new songs were played Tuesday at Kung Fu Necktie, but I'm eagerly anticipating more of the new songs!

Despite two more bands, I knew things would not go well, as the Boston band up next floundered with the crowd.  First they mistakenly called the city Portsmouth.  Then they completely failed to dig themselves out by bringing up Boston sports to the Philly crowd.  Future reference: never bring up sports teams outside of Philly unless you arrive and leave in a tour bus!

Bands Pick The Bands - 2016 XPoNential Music Festival Presented by Subaru - Artists Preview

Wooo Hooooo It's XPoNential Fest Time!!!!  Every year WXPN brings a ton of great bands and artists to the Wiggins Park shore in Camden, NJ.  With so many bands on the line-up it's daunting to figure out which bands to see.  Fortunately, the way WXPN does the line-ups you CAN make it to every band should you choose.  However, we all know it's going to be hot as hell.  Not quite as hot as 2011 with the 100 degree days, but still super hot.   Luckily for us, some of the festival performers have put in their two cents for which bands they are excited about. Rosemary Fiki   starts the fest at 4pm today on the JerseyArts.Com Marina Stage. Let's see what she's recommending: Band Most Excited to Share the Festival Stage with : This is our first time time performing at XPoNential so to be completely honest, I'm super stoked to share the Festival stage with everyone! If I absolutely had to choose, I would say The Districts. We actually shared the stage wit

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve
