Thanks to the fine folks at David Wax Museum, a year ago I found the most wonderful trio, Pearl And The Beard last November. It was a great start to my fan-hood of these Brooklynites. I saw them open for David Wax at the end of November, during an incredible show. I loved them, the wife loved them, and most importantly Molly loved them. Not to mention videos galore on the internets of these fantastically and artistically talented musicians.
Although I had my new Killing the Darlings vinyl and the most awesome Daytrotter session to listen to, my desire was to see them live again. This quest to see them again was frustratingly fruitless for the next year. I missed them in Wilmington, DE due to lovely back spasms (mine, not theirs). I had a conflict with a Brown Bird/Devil Makes Three show. There was another show in NJ that was cancelled. Then, I missed a free show in Harrisburg, Pa while I attended a closer Pokey LaFarge show at the Philadelphia Folk Fest. But finally it was going to happen; Pearl and the Beard were going to play within about 10 mile from my house at the Keswick Theatre. But goddamn, those tickets were expensive.
Would you believe it was cheaper to go to DC to see Pearl And The Beard open for Ani DiFranco at the famed 9:30 club? I didn't, but I snagged tickets before it was too late.
Ironically, my daughter got sick a day or two before and nearly squashed my attempts to see them yet again, but I would not be denied.
Set List DC
9:30 Club
Pearl And The Beard
November 10th, 2012
1. Devil's Head Down
2. Sweetness
3. Black Vessel
4. 40k
5. Lament Of Coronado Brown
6. Reverend
7. Hot Volcano
Although it was a quick 25 minute set, it was fantastic. The setlist was designed to kill, as Pearl And The Beard is making a return engagement on 11.29 WASHINGTON, DC @ Rock and Roll Hotel, 8pm [ TIX ]. Me, I hope to see them at Philadelphia's Johnny Brenda's on 11.30, but I digress!
Pearl And The Beard, opened with the soon to be legendary "Devil's Head Down" showing off the tremendous low range on the cello by Emily Hope Price. Upbeat "Sweetness" was next keeping the crowd happy. Anyone who wasn't smiling as Jocelyn Mackenzie sang the chorus "I'm drunk, I'm drunk on your love" clearly wasn't paying attention. Black Vessel was next, from the Black Vessel EP, not 'Vessel" from Killing the Darlings", This version accentuates Emily's Cello playing, but not as much as she closed the song with the toss of her bow and some furious strumming. The middle of the set, "40K", accompanied the joyous announcement that their latest video for "40K" is scheduled for imminent release.
Emily battled the rude crowd during "Lament of Coronado Brown", who was not silenced by Jeremy's guitar rescue. "Reverend" was cool. On "Hot Volcano" helped by Jocelyn's kazoo skills, Emily and company totally won the battle with the fans, as Emily clearly meant business with triumphant vocals on the sexy "Hot Volcano" bringing many in the crowd with her during the climax of the song!
