Recently I came across this incredible session by Pearl and the Beard with the folks @ Audiotree Live. It's not often that you find a session that you want to watch over and over again; maybe a track here or there, but not a full show. This breaks the trend. This session shows off everything wonderful about Pearl and the Beard. You get to really meet the band, while hearing their pure, incredible sound. It's a great sampling of their tracks, some new some older, some yet to be released.
I saw Pearl and the Beard back in November by chance as they were opening for another uber talented band The David Wax Museum. I had about a week to get familiar with the band and while learning about the band I was so impressed and excited to see them, the opener, that I requested an interview before the show. They were just such cool, interesting folk, that I really could have spent a whole evening just hanging out and picking their brains. The results of that pre-show session are here: Myth Busting With Pearl and the Beard! This video session below, is a great way to learn even more. The host gets down and dirty with the band digging.
Give yourself some time to really soak in this session. Take first track 'Devil's Head Down', Emily Hope Price's cello playing is impressive. Jeremy Styles vocals are great, as his full range is shown. You can't forget the ladies lungs either, Jocelyn Mackenzie and Emily Hope Price come out soft then come right back at you with strong.
On 'Vessel' at 13:05, watch Emily Hope Price playing the cello is great. Jeremy takes an unusual approach using a bow on his guitar. You can see the band is clearly learning from each other making the band greater as a whole. Even the lengthy 'James' is worth watching and listening to each second all seven some minutes of it. The songs of Pearl and the Beard just have elements that you aren't getting elsewhere. I get lost in the harmonies and instrumentation each time. Even the simpler songs, take 'Lament of Coronado Brown; for example @38:40. It's just simple guitar, drum & strum of the cello coming together beautifully. When watching the live full band version of 'Apple', I wonder how many times can I use beautiful to describe them?

The between song questions are pretty random, but the band gives some great answers. After 'Prodigal Daughter' the host asks what advice do they have for up & coming bands. Jocelyn Mackenzie answers it best by responding, "Keep doing what you are doing ... Just don't stop. Don't stop all day every day, if you are thinking about it, then DO IT, because no one is going to take you more seriously or be more passionate about your project than you are. No one is going to take you seriously unless you are passionate about your project! It doesn't stop there, more advice ensues!
