Philadelphia Extreme Super Metro Area April Concert Preview PART 1

Last time I sat down for a concert preview I wrote "The best thing about living along the megalopolis of I-95 cities is the close proximity and ease of travel to each other!"  While very true, I took that two the extreme, listing Brooklyn to Baltimore and as far West as Pittsburgh!  This time, I plan on expanding the borders a wee bit more.  Looking at the best shows coming to town this spring... or those best shows coming close enough!

Here are the best upcoming shows that I have spotted for your viewing pleasure!  If you go, please let me know how the shows were.  I'll review as many as I make it to!  In the last two months I made it to six shows; Blind Pilot, Brown Bird, Jeannine Hebb, Anaïs Mitchell, the Devil Makes Three, and Gotye+Kimbra.  I am hoping to better those numbers in the next two months!

The Beautiful View are on an East Coast swing right now.  The bring their radio friendly alt-pop to town.  Some say they are reminiscent of the Killers, but listen to 'The Horseman' to make your own decision.  They are hitting some hip smaller venues, like Baltimore's Otto Bar (3/27).  Two venues, I guess I will have to add to my list of venues to check out would be Philadelphia's North Star Bar (3/28) and Pittsburgh's Smiling Moose (Upstairs on 4/1)

The First Aid Kit is hitting some of the countries best mid sized venues, while taking the long way to the Coachella Festival in Indio, California for.  Best bets include Union Transfer in Philadelphia, March 31st and The Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Oregon April 12th!  Get a taste of their music before heading out!  They are touring for the hot album The Lions Roar.

Hospitality is also on an East Coast leg, going all around the East Coast including two dates in DC.  If I have my way, I'd catch them at the glorious Trocadero in Philadelphia on April 3rd.  I was at the Main Street Records in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia waiting for the in store Ben Kweller show.  Hospitality was playing in the background.  I must say it's a great album from what I've heard.  I just profiled them for my Free Song Alert series.  You should also check them out, hint hint!

Lawsuits New Hope, Pa's rock, folk, fun-band are playing an EP release show at the Philadelphia Milk Boy on Saturday April 2ndHot Love is the name of the new EP, the follow up to 2011's Darleen.

Listening to the albums, while driving around town, I can only imagine the parties that must erupt at their live shows.  The I thought 'SummerLea' from Darleen was attention grabbing, but each time I play  'Long To Mend' from Hot Love I find myself playing it over and over.

Before the show, 'Long To Mend' is the available for your listening pleasure via the band:
Be sure to check out 'SummerLea' by the Lawsuits

CLUTCH In about a week, Clutch kicks off their latest tour.  In the last twenty years, few have toured more than these hard core troubadours!  I'll be catching them in Lancaster, for my first Clutch show in over10 years.  Unfortunately, it's not that they haven't rocked.  It's more that I stopped rocking for a while!  I'm back on the wagon again, and Clutch is there to make me feel like I'm in high school again!

This video's not the best quality, but it's what started me into Clutch all those years ago!

Bands Pick The Bands - 2016 XPoNential Music Festival Presented by Subaru - Artists Preview

Wooo Hooooo It's XPoNential Fest Time!!!!  Every year WXPN brings a ton of great bands and artists to the Wiggins Park shore in Camden, NJ.  With so many bands on the line-up it's daunting to figure out which bands to see.  Fortunately, the way WXPN does the line-ups you CAN make it to every band should you choose.  However, we all know it's going to be hot as hell.  Not quite as hot as 2011 with the 100 degree days, but still super hot.   Luckily for us, some of the festival performers have put in their two cents for which bands they are excited about. Rosemary Fiki   starts the fest at 4pm today on the JerseyArts.Com Marina Stage. Let's see what she's recommending: Band Most Excited to Share the Festival Stage with : This is our first time time performing at XPoNential so to be completely honest, I'm super stoked to share the Festival stage with everyone! If I absolutely had to choose, I would say The Districts. We actually shared the stage wit

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve
