Mike Doughty is back in action with a new album Yes, and Also Yes and a soon to be released book The Book of Drugs! He stopped at World Cafe Live, Free At Noon to play a few new tracks and a few favorites!
Ironically, the show started off with 'Day By Day By' which only exemplified the stark contrast between the dark setting inside World Cafe Live downstairs, and the mid-day sleepy show! Throughout the show, Mike gave some tidbits on his new songs, and complimented the crowd on their growing sexiness.
New Album Highlight: 'Na Na Nothing' It has some really fun writing "Na Na Nothing... La La Lucky"
Old Albums Highlight: 'I Just Want the Girl in the Blue Dress to Keep On Dancing'
Set List - Mike Doughty 11-18-11
Track - respective album
1. 'Day By Day By' - Yes, and Also Yes
2. 'Into The Un' -Yes, and Also Yes
3. 'Telegenic Exes, #2 (Astoria)'-Yes, and Also Yes
4. 'Na Na Nothing' - Yes, and Also Yes
5. 'Strike the Motion' - Yes, and Also Yes
6 'I Just Want the Girl in the Blue Dress to Keep On Dancing' - Golden Delicious
7. '27 Jennifers' - Golden Delicious
8. 'Looking at the World from the Bottom of a Well' - Haughty Melodic
Mike Doughty had written a primer to his album for fans, so I'll let him tell it best:
Here's some selections that were relevant to the Free at Noon show
1. The title, YES AND ALSO YES was the headline of my profile on an online dating site. I improvised it off the top of my head, because they wouldn’t let me post until I wrote a headline. I was wretchedly unsuccessful at online dating.
2. The single, “NA NA NOTHING”, was partially stolen from a song written by Nikki Sixx, Dan Wilson (wrote “Closing Time”), and Matt Gerrard (wrote a bunch of tunes in “High School Musical.”) (I got their permission to steal it)
4. The song “Into the Un” was written for, and rejected by thek. (It’s Twilight soundtrac about goth kids on LSD in a train station)

i've only heard one song by him and that's because his song (and i'm blanking on the name) was on an episode of veronica mars. it's a gorgeous song, so i'll have to check out his new album!
ReplyDelete@Abby! I am seeing a trend here Abbs. You like songs from movies and tv, that I also recommend? First it was Iron & Wine, now Mike Doughty. What else are you watching, perhaps I should review the music being played.
ReplyDeleteI highly recommend Mike Doughty's 2005 Haughty Melodic. But based on the songs played Friday, the new disc Yes, and Also Yes seems like it should do well also!
