Free Music Alert of the Week!

TELEKINESIS, LOW ANTHEM, the GRATEFUL DEAD & HONEY HONEY via AMAZON, NOISETRADE, DEAD.NEt & HONEYHONEYBAND.COM

Via Amazon.com:

I've been getting free tracks from Amazon for a few years now.  There's a lot of random stuff out there, but there are also some great finds!   I've been lucky enough to find Blind Pilot, Neko Case, Lisa Hannigan, Fleet Foxes, and  John Vanderslice, all via their downloads.  If you don't get the newsletter weekly from Amazon it can be a bit cumbersome finding the free music on the Amazon site.  Oddly a month or two ago, they stopped adding weekly links to free music in their newsletter.  However, they instead replaced it with a monthly "Artist on the Rise" download.

The latest installment includes Alt-Pop outfit Telekensis  hit 'Car Crash, folkish James Vincent McMorrow, and the Canadian band City & Colour

City & Colour Winter Tourmates the Low Anthem have announced a free download of What the Crow Brings via Noisetrade.com.  This artist friendly site, helps provide outlets for bands to get their material out to their fans.  The novelty here, is that you can chose to download for free or chose an amount to "tip" the band for their art. I know I've recently used the site to pick up some Jason Heath and the Greedy Souls.  I've also noticed the Mom + Pop Mixtape (Vol.1) a sampler from the Mom + Pop label including tremendous tracks from Freelance Whales, Sleeper Agent, Infinity Guitars, An Horse, & Metric.  The Civil Wars also have a free live album Live At Eddie's Attic, which has been available for some time now from their own website.

I'm not really sure of the motivation for The Low Anthem to use the site, as they appear to be successful touring like mad for the last few years, with albums Oh My God Charlie Darwin and 2011's Smart Flesh.  However, if the increased traffic to the site helps some of the other bands then I'm all for it.  Also, for any Low Anthem fan that hasn't picked up this gem, now is a chance to take a step back to the band's simpler times for the ultra consistent Folk album, including the Daniel Lefkowitz gem 'This God Dam House'.  There's not a "hit" on the album, but I love it from from start to finish, having listened to it on repeat many times through the last two years, while driving around my Philadelphia territory!

For newbies to the album, check out the effect on 'The Ballad of the Broken Bones'.  This is a sweet effect Ben Knox Miller has perfected, using two cell phones on a joint call, next two each other, whistling into one and playing with the echo.

Thanks to reader Tim, who brought to my attention the:

Per Dead.Net:  "We're on a mission to make a miracle every day. As a token of our appreciation for making 2011 an epic year, we're giving away a high-quality 320Kbps MP3 download every day this month. That's 30 days of unreleased Grateful Dead tracks from the vault, selected by tape archivist David Lemieux!"

I found an awesome track 'LA RIVER' by HoneyHoney via a KCRW Today's Top Tune.  This song has fantastic imagery.  I could really see every thing as she described it.  The banks of the rolling river, the trains, Chinatown, the body in the weeds, all of it.

Regrettably that particular download was only available on that specific date.  I've tried to find it else where for my readers, but instead on their site I found an additional download, 'Turn That Finger Around' a soulful Folk-Country ballad.

Bands Pick The Bands - 2016 XPoNential Music Festival Presented by Subaru - Artists Preview

Wooo Hooooo It's XPoNential Fest Time!!!!  Every year WXPN brings a ton of great bands and artists to the Wiggins Park shore in Camden, NJ.  With so many bands on the line-up it's daunting to figure out which bands to see.  Fortunately, the way WXPN does the line-ups you CAN make it to every band should you choose.  However, we all know it's going to be hot as hell.  Not quite as hot as 2011 with the 100 degree days, but still super hot.   Luckily for us, some of the festival performers have put in their two cents for which bands they are excited about. Rosemary Fiki   starts the fest at 4pm today on the JerseyArts.Com Marina Stage. Let's see what she's recommending: Band Most Excited to Share the Festival Stage with : This is our first time time performing at XPoNential so to be completely honest, I'm super stoked to share the Festival stage with everyone! If I absolutely had to choose, I would say The Districts. We actually shared the stage wit

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve
