First off, I have to say, Union Transfer comes off as a great venue. It is well laid out (including tons of space for merch), there is plenty of space, a retractable stage to fit the expected crowd size. They've got good beer, attentive wait staff, and are just a few blocks form Prohibition!
Blind Pilot came to Philadelphia a little more than half way through their Fall tour supporting We Are The Tide. This was the first show for The Portland sextet to be supported by Gregory Alan Isakov. Isakov and co, were very enjoyable as if I already known his songs
The Blind Pilot immediately laid out two hits 'Keep Your Right' and 'Go On Say It' leaving the night to rest on the strength of the bands entire work. They were such a even keel happy bunch, so polite and mild mannered, at times it hardly felt like a rock show, rather like hanging out in the living room. This enjoyable peacefulness was challenged and met with the unplugged 'Three Rounds and A Sound' just before encore!
Blind Pilot was fantastic throughout, really showing off their talents with out being show boats. Dave Jorgensen was clearly having a blast notably bouncing along on the rhodes during 'Always'. His melodious trumpet stood out on 'Half Moon, was fantastic on 'Buried a Bone' and a solo on 'We Are the Tide'. Ian Krist's vibraphone playing was well received on 'Oviedo' and Story I told'. Ryan Dobrowski was perfect on drums throughout and especially on 'Story I told'. Kati Claborn impressed constantly switching instruments, ranging from banjo to dulcimer, ukulele, guitar, and vocals. She even played some drums on closing song 'We are the Tide'. And Luke Ydstie, as if I could forget his playing, as I some how did getting the tour poster signed after the show. Luke had some highly animated electric bass playing, some killer oohs and ahhs, and was fabulous on the upright bass! Israel Nebeker, pronounced, but was never overwhelming on his peaceful tunes. He even got in on the variety act as well playing the pump organ on 'New York'.
Israel told some stories somehow making the intimate evening more intimate as you learned about his songs. 'Oviedo' he says, started as notes for a post card about a city in Spain that he spent time in. 'Paint or Pollen' was written when he was painting houses while "wishing his girlfriend lived in the same state as him". Kati got in on the act, lamenting the newness of the album more or less.
Lead track from We Are The Tide was a surprise crowd favorite two thirds through the show. However, this was clearly out voted as favorite when the band ended the initial set with the unplugged 'Three Rounds and A Sound'. Israel indicated it could only work if the crowd was quiet, and instantaneously it was silent enough to hear a door squeak. Once the song began it was heaven. The requested crowd participation chorus was simply awesome! After the jubilant encore request, Israel rewarded the crowd with a superb solo 'Just one'. Finally, the night was capped with a tremendous 'We Are the Tide'!
