Weekly Update -October 9th edition

Cool Web Gem: Foster the People @ NPR's Tiny Desk Concert

Set List: :"Houdini",current single "Helena Beat" & mega hit "Pumped Up Kicks".

I dig this set as it is really a stripped down version of the band. You see it raw and personal. I can appreciate the album more, as I now hear his voice more than I ever did in the heavily produced super fun Torches. Oh, and for those of you wondering "What??" when you hear 'Pumped Up Kicks' Such a great song, but is he for guns and violence? Here's your answers

Fast Fact: Pearl Jam Ten Club memberships have changed..
It used to be that membership was $20 a year, and if the band got around to it, you would get the newsletter and holiday vinyl.  The band has come to terms that some fans are just not into vinyl, but also that we do so much in a digital world.

Now you have the choice of Digital or Analog.  Digiital is the same old membership, but no longer getting the vinyl instead you get a digital download of both the music and newsletter.  Analog gets you the Digital package and the physical items.  However, a new quirk that I missed before was a free download code and a T-shirt.

How cool is this? I had been thinking of downloading the 2009 Austin show, featured on Austin City Limits anyway, now I get a new Pearl Jam T-shirt for $10. Amazingly, the T-shirt just arrived today. It says "I'm Analog" and has a graphic of an analog wave.

The vinyl came a few days ago, I'm excited to have a listening party with my new record player an all my new vinyl (Pearl Jam, Blind Pilot, Brown Bird, Low Anthem, Iron&Wine, etc)

Free Music ALERT:

the Civil Wars, who I just featured today as the Cover Song of the Week, offers their hit single 'Barton Hollow' on their site for signing up to their mailing list @thecivilwars.com

I've been a fan of this song since I first heard it.   I had mentioned it before , so hopefully you have it by now, but if not.here's another chance.  I mention this song again, as I finally appreciate the whole album.  I was stuck on this single, the namesake of the album, looking for more of it on the album, which there is not.  But the album itself is just so pure and powerful, it's a winner for 2011!

spinner.com mp3 of the day
I just added this to my podcasts.  In the week, I already found a winner with Emil and Friends - Prescriptions.  Lots of times the free tracks can be a quick pass, but every time this song came up in my newly designed RECENT FREE play list, I kept checking to see who this was.  It's cheery, but not annoying.  It's light but not boring.  It's just a cool song!

Amazon - Artists on the rise:  For a limited time, these 9 tracks are available free from Amazon.  I had to re-do my RECENT FREE play list to make sure these tracks don't get left behind.  But I am most intrigued by BOBBY.    I was first exposed to them opening for the Low Anthem and Daniel Lefkowitz.  I missed their set hanging out with a longtime out of town pal, but I have kept them on my Radar to get a good listen in the future.

NEXT CONCERT(s): Next Sunday @ World Cafe Live = Philadelphia, Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three will be opening for the Southern Culture on Skids.  So far for 2011, Pokey LaFarge & Co, have been my album of the year and @ Newport they were the best set I've seen so far in 2011.   I'm looking forward to seeing their set indoors.  I'd rather be watching them in Pittsburgh 10-28 @ Club Cafe as headliners, but I'll take what I can get from these guys!

CONCERT(s) TBD FOR OCTOBER:

Between Pokey LaFarge and November 4th, I stand to see Spirit Family Reunion, Portugal the Man, Butch Walker, Blitzen Trapper, Medeski Martin & Wood, Hayes Carll, St. Vincent & Blind Pilot. It could be one hell of a few weeks! I'll keep you posted if I can pull all of this off!

I did confirm I will be seeing Blitzen Trapper. I listed them in my recent free posts. But if, like me you need to familiarize yourself with the rest of the new album. Here's the streaming album from their site!

Bands Pick The Bands - 2016 XPoNential Music Festival Presented by Subaru - Artists Preview

Wooo Hooooo It's XPoNential Fest Time!!!!  Every year WXPN brings a ton of great bands and artists to the Wiggins Park shore in Camden, NJ.  With so many bands on the line-up it's daunting to figure out which bands to see.  Fortunately, the way WXPN does the line-ups you CAN make it to every band should you choose.  However, we all know it's going to be hot as hell.  Not quite as hot as 2011 with the 100 degree days, but still super hot.   Luckily for us, some of the festival performers have put in their two cents for which bands they are excited about. Rosemary Fiki   starts the fest at 4pm today on the JerseyArts.Com Marina Stage. Let's see what she's recommending: Band Most Excited to Share the Festival Stage with : This is our first time time performing at XPoNential so to be completely honest, I'm super stoked to share the Festival stage with everyone! If I absolutely had to choose, I would say The Districts. We actually shared the stage wit

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve
