Weekly Update -October 2nd edition

Hey gang.  Turns out my writing friends were right.  Stop worrying about writing everyday and it will all work out.  Thanks for those of you who have been supportive of the blog, and me being all in on my passions!

Fast Fact:  Peter Bjorn & John are a trio, not a duo of Mr. Bjorn & his friend John!!!!!!

Per Wikipedia : "Peter Bjorn and John (unofficially abbreviated as PB&J) are a Swedish indie rock band, formed in Stockholm in 1999 and named after the first names of the band's members: Peter Morén (vocals, guitar and harmonica), Björn Yttling (bass guitar, keyboards and vocals) and John Eriksson (drums, percussion and vocals)."

Although better known for earlier hits, 'Young Folks' or 'It Don't Move Me', 'Breaker, Breaker' is my #1.  From 2011's Living Thing ,  it has been a heavy rotation mainstay for me since I picked it up earlier this year!

Never Saw That Coming: I went to a beautiful wedding, two weeks ago in New Hope, Pa.  The musicians for the procession were a guitar & banjo player.

The second snippet was the most memorable for me.  'I've Just Seen A Face' from the Beatles 1965 Help has been a mysterious song for me for some time.  Oddly it's a Beatles song that people just don't know.  I likely wouldn't know it, had it not been for Eddie Vedder squeezing it in amongst a live set years ago for Pearl Jam.

Even better in this veil of mystery, is that I had no idea how beautiful a song it was until hearing it that day.  A song can be more important to you as time goes.  Incubus 'Make Yourself' has always been my anthem of working my ass off.  'Danny's Song' officially became one of my all time favorites when I danced with my Mother at my wedding.  But 'I've Just Seen A Face' has grown legendary through the years.  Last December during an honest to goodness holiday sing a long, the Lennon-McCartney verse was included in the songbook.  It's such a great song to sing with 40 beautiful, happy people that chose to spend their precious holiday time together keeping traditions alive.  However, it is most awesome in the context of appreciating that chance of meeting the person that you will admire for the rest of your waking days.

I've just seen a face,
I can't forget the time or place
That we'd just met, she's just the girl for me
And I want all the world to see we've met
Na na na na na na

Had it been another day
I might have looked the other way
But I had never been aware
And as it is I dream of her tonight
Na na na na na na

CHORUS:
Falling, yes I am falling
And she keeps calling me back again

I have never known
The likes of this, I've been alone
And I have missed things and kept out of sight
But other girls were never quite like this
Na na na na na na

CHORUS

I've just seen a face
I can t forget the time or place
And we'd just met, she's just the girl for me
And I want all the world to see we've met
Na na na na na na

CHORUS

Vinyl!!!
Pearl Jam's 2010 Holiday Single is coming out any day! I am so excited to get it now that I have a new record player.  I have a few years worth of singles to listen to once I get my basement put back together after some recent storm cleanup.

Recent vinyl pickups:  Blind Pilot  We Are the Tide, The Low Anthem  What the Crow Brings,  The Low Anthem Charlie Darwin single.  I also secured a whole stash of old records from my mom's garage.  I am most excited to hear Bruce Springsteen  Born in the USA on vinyl yet again!

LAST CONCERT(s):  TV On The Radio with Broken Social Scene.  My wife called me the day of, asking if she should get tickets from her co-worker.  The babysitter stars aligned and we headed out to our first concert at the Mann Center - Philadelphia  since we saw Jack Johnson open for Ben Harper many years back  EDITORS NOTE: WOW!  I AM STILL AMAZED YEARS LATER HOW MUCH BEN HARPER ROCKED OUT THAT NIGHT!!!

Awesome trading card supplied by the Mann Center
Broken Social Scene was pretty cool.  I am only familiar with them through my Brosef, and knowing that Feist was once part of their brood.  It was staggering to see that many musicians on stage at the same time.  The cover of  Modest Mouse's 'The World At Large' was pretty sweet as well.

TV On the Radio was crazy.  I didn't care for the sound, but I think I was sitting in a bad spot.  I couldn't hear anything he was actually saying.  Just the crazy loud music.  The music was really good, but I was overwhelmed by the loudness.  Despite that, I am a new fan.  I can't wait to hear them in a controlled environment.  From many post-show discussions, they are a pretty cool, but some how under the radar band.   Rumor has it, their 2006 release Return to Cookie Mountain was Album of the Year for 2006 by Spin Magazine.

William Elliot Whitmore & the Low Anthem.

After a long drive from Iowa, William Elliot Whitmore took the stage at World Cafe Live (Downstairs) and held his own, opening for the Low AnthemLefkowitz, Lissie, Annie & the Beekeepers, etc) he's played his way onto my wish list and play list.

Meanwhile, the foursome from Providence, had the neatest set list quirk of the year with a chronological journey through their music.  Unfortunately, the babysitter was eager to go home to golf in the morning, so we missed any newer tracks.  The older tracks were still fresh.  My wife who isn't nearly as exposed to the Low Anthem as I am, was shocked and delighted with Jocie Adams' pipes on 'Home I'll Never Be'

Friday was Brown Bird @ World Cafe Live Check out the review, as we await the new album Salt for Salt coming out later this month.

NEXT CONCERT(s):  I'm set for this Friday's David Wax Museum show at Long Wood Gardens.. very excited in fact.  Also, tickets have been purchased for Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three,  opening for Southern Culture on Skids.

WRAP UP:
I've got a lot in the works this month.   I have at least one interview in the works, a few album reviews started, and plans for some more concerts.   Please let me know what you think of the new format.  I think this will work much better getting thoughts out throughout the week, and not being pressured to keep up on a daily schedule.

Bands Pick The Bands - 2016 XPoNential Music Festival Presented by Subaru - Artists Preview

Wooo Hooooo It's XPoNential Fest Time!!!!  Every year WXPN brings a ton of great bands and artists to the Wiggins Park shore in Camden, NJ.  With so many bands on the line-up it's daunting to figure out which bands to see.  Fortunately, the way WXPN does the line-ups you CAN make it to every band should you choose.  However, we all know it's going to be hot as hell.  Not quite as hot as 2011 with the 100 degree days, but still super hot.   Luckily for us, some of the festival performers have put in their two cents for which bands they are excited about. Rosemary Fiki   starts the fest at 4pm today on the JerseyArts.Com Marina Stage. Let's see what she's recommending: Band Most Excited to Share the Festival Stage with : This is our first time time performing at XPoNential so to be completely honest, I'm super stoked to share the Festival stage with everyone! If I absolutely had to choose, I would say The Districts. We actually shared the stage wit

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve
