Molly Song of the Week - 'Charlotte's Web' by Annie & the Beekeepers

Part of the ongoing series of 'Molly Songs': a weekly look featuring songs that our children will love, but more importantly parents can enjoy as well.

In most cases, Molly songs are child focused or rather upbeat.  In this case, 'Charlotte's Web', is neither, rather a captivating song that Molly has loved for the last year and a half.  The child like attraction to the opening track of Annie Lynch & the Beekeepers 2007's self titled album is two fold.  First, for some amazing coincidence Molly refers to the song as "Piggy Song".  Obviously someone had to have mentioned this connection to the children's book, but it wasn't my wife nor I.  Second, Molly has been having quiet time or falling asleep to the Annie Lynch albums since I've picked them up in April 2010.

Except for one rousing track on 2009's Squid Hill Sessions led by Mat Davidson vocals instead of Annie Lynch, the albums are incredibly consistent and captivating.  You can be sucked in for 30 minutes at a time into a beautiful trance, as if you had been smoked into submission by a beekeeper yourself.

Annie Lynch and the Beekeepers: "Charlotte's Web" Live

I saw Annie & the Beekeepers open for the Low Anthem in February early 2010 at Philadelphia's First Unitarian Church.  Original mandolin, banjo, accordian, and saw player Mat Davidson was then playing for the Low Anthem.  Without Mat, they toured with a steel guitar player, creating wonderful music at the church.  It was a fantastic show, one of many I had hoped to see of the band in the future.  The next time, in April, it was my wife's turn to see them, and fortunately she picked up the albums for me, as it would be the last time they came through, due to lineup issues.

I'll let the blurb from her site tell you best, what she just recently wrapped up:

In August of 2011, Brooklyn-Based Songwriters, Annie Lynch and Michaela Anne head west for their first respective full-length west coast tour. Traveling from Seattle to LA, their sets will include solo performances as well as first-time collaborations

Annie Lynch:
After four years and two releases with Annie and The Beekeepers, an internationally-recognized Americana outfit established in Boston, Annie Lynch embarks on her first, highly-anticipated solo tour, performing new material as well as more intimate interpretations of older original favorites. Annie’s songwriting and musicianship have received critical acclaim from such distinguished publications as Paste Magazine and the Boston Globe amongst others as well as in independent radio across the nation. She has had the honor of sharing bills with Josh Ritter, Justin Townes Earle, The Punch Brothers, Dr Dog's Scott McMicken, Joe Pug, Surprise Me Mr Davis, and The Low Anthem, as well as performing at notable festivals such as SXSW, Philadelphia Folk Festival, Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion, Boston Folk Festival, and the UK's End of the Road.

Head to her media page for more listens to some of her Beekeepers material.

To be kept up on Annie and her sometime bandmates, follow them on Facebook, or sign up for the newsletter on their homepage.

Currently Mat Davidson &  Ken Woodward are members of Folk Revival band Spirit Family Reunion which is also currently on tour!

My Apologies to Alexandra Spalding, as I couldn't find the post to recall her current project!

Bands Pick The Bands - 2016 XPoNential Music Festival Presented by Subaru - Artists Preview

Wooo Hooooo It's XPoNential Fest Time!!!!  Every year WXPN brings a ton of great bands and artists to the Wiggins Park shore in Camden, NJ.  With so many bands on the line-up it's daunting to figure out which bands to see.  Fortunately, the way WXPN does the line-ups you CAN make it to every band should you choose.  However, we all know it's going to be hot as hell.  Not quite as hot as 2011 with the 100 degree days, but still super hot.   Luckily for us, some of the festival performers have put in their two cents for which bands they are excited about. Rosemary Fiki   starts the fest at 4pm today on the JerseyArts.Com Marina Stage. Let's see what she's recommending: Band Most Excited to Share the Festival Stage with : This is our first time time performing at XPoNential so to be completely honest, I'm super stoked to share the Festival stage with everyone! If I absolutely had to choose, I would say The Districts. We actually shared the stage wit

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve
