News & Notes

Welcome back everyone! I've got a lot on my mind, but little time to do it/write it.  Here goes:

LAST CONCERT: Amy Correia graced NJ during one of her limited concerts in support of You Go Your Way. Great Show, but I need to get a blanket for outdoor concerts!  Check out the review linked at her name

The Brutalist BricksNEXT CONCERT(s): XPoNential Music Festival live from Camden, NJ July 22 - 24, 2011 at Wiggins Park on the Waterfront!   This is a 3 day fest, you can buy for all 3 days, or purchase individual days.  There's even a discount for xpn members.  I am thrilled as I finally get to see Ted Leo and the Pharmacists after a walking away from a venue nearly 3 years ago. I am heading out for Saturday's show on my own.  In support of The Brutalist Bricks Ted & co, take the stage @ 5:15 followed by Booker T.

Booker T, is solo now, without the MG's.  He is a lifetime achievement Grammy awardee and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  If I'm lucky enough to stick around for the show it should be quite the treat.

Sunday I am going with my daughter, Molly.  The plan is to at minimum catch Hayes Carll.  At the member price of $15, and $5 for children. I couldn't pass up the chance to catch Hayes Carll live.  After several years, the Hayes Carll star is starting to shine bright!  It's a full fledge festival including the Kid's Cornerp so I should have a great chance to stick around for Carbon Leaf & possibly Emmylou Harris

CONCERTS TBD:  For what would be my first World Cafe Live show, Melissa Ferrick is playing September 11th.  I started listening to Melissa Ferrick back in high school when she was a not yet openly gay, and on a big label.

Willing To WaitMassive Blur

When I moved to Baltimore after a few years out of college, I had re-discovered her, only to find her as an indie, openly gay artist, with an accoustic-indie sound.  The tempo had increased, as did her awesomeness.  Lyrically she was still impressive, but she was now writing with a clean slate.  I haven't been keeping up with her as much as I'd like, but after seeing her once in Baltimore, I'd take a chance on seeing her anytime she comes to town, based on her high energy excellent live show!

Here's a few links to my favorites of her recent albums:

If you are not heading to Newport Folk Festival, but are in the NY/NJ/PA area, head to Readington NJ July 30th for the Festival of Ballooning where she is one of the openers for headliner Bare Naked Ladies

My favorite track from the compilation so far is Morning Son from Country Mice.  Like a lot of new music this year, it has a country twang in combination with some electric guitar

Middle of EverywhereANTICIPATED ALBUMS: Blind Pilot & Pokey LaFarge each have very eagerly awaited albums coming soon.  Middle of Everwhere is Pokey LaFarge & company's new album after an impressive Riverboat Soul helped them tour around the U.S. & Europe.  My three year old already knows him to identify him within seconds of hearing his music and some of his lyrics.  It's only a matter of time before more folks feel the same way.   Along with the Decemberists, the St. Louis quartet keeps me overly excited for the upcoming Newport Folk Fest.  Amongst the tracks is a current favorite of mine, 'Drinkin Whiskey Tonight'(see below as it was featured with 'Claude Jones' on YouTube.

We Are The Tide, is the upcoming release (September 13th) for Blind Pilot.  3 Rounds and a Sound brought much acclaim to the band during the last 3 years.  As the bands following (and the band itself) grew, they toured about.  This fall they tour the Western states with new material.

Bands Pick The Bands - 2016 XPoNential Music Festival Presented by Subaru - Artists Preview

Wooo Hooooo It's XPoNential Fest Time!!!!  Every year WXPN brings a ton of great bands and artists to the Wiggins Park shore in Camden, NJ.  With so many bands on the line-up it's daunting to figure out which bands to see.  Fortunately, the way WXPN does the line-ups you CAN make it to every band should you choose.  However, we all know it's going to be hot as hell.  Not quite as hot as 2011 with the 100 degree days, but still super hot.   Luckily for us, some of the festival performers have put in their two cents for which bands they are excited about. Rosemary Fiki   starts the fest at 4pm today on the JerseyArts.Com Marina Stage. Let's see what she's recommending: Band Most Excited to Share the Festival Stage with : This is our first time time performing at XPoNential so to be completely honest, I'm super stoked to share the Festival stage with everyone! If I absolutely had to choose, I would say The Districts. We actually shared the stage wit

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve
