Top 10 reasons this is the summer of music! #6 FREE Outside live music!!

What's better than enjoying a beautiful day outside.  I would say listening to live music on a beautiful day outside!  The only thing that bests that is when it is F-R-E-E.

Back in my youth, I spent my summers organizing the social calendar for many of my friends.  We kept very busy with a gambit of FREE.  Sunday & Wednesday were free movies on Flagstaff hill overlooking the Oakland section of Pittsburgh.  Fridays were Msquared.  This was a few bands playing for free at Market Square in Pittsburgh.  The shows were awesome, the unheralded Pittsburgh music scene was free for the locals.  the Clarks, Brownie Mary, Sleeping Giants, Push, the list goes on.  The music was great and FREE!!!

This summer, as has been the case for the last 8 summers, I don't live in Pittsburgh anymore.  However, I am still on the prowl for free.  I am especially on the prowl for free music!   Living in Philly, I am lucky as I am a quick I-95 drive from several cities.

First on my wish list is Amy Correia, she plays Tuesday June 21st the Free Outdoor Concert in the Park, part of the Gloucester County Summer Series in Atkinson Park. I didn't get to stay during her last show in Phoenixville, Pa due to a fidgety three year old, so I hope to rectify this. Of the four songs we got to see, they were fantastic. The best was the pre-song banter+song for 'Blind River Boy'. She has been touring sporadically for You Go Your Way as she is sans record label, so if you have the chance to see her live DO IT!!!!!

Free Concerts in NYC's Central Park: summerstage.org
There are a ton of listings on the site, the best I've stumbled on so far, and seriously considering taking my 3 year old for a day out in NYC:
Blue Note Jazz Festival: Medeski Martin & Wood / Josh Roseman & The King Froopy Allstars / Jim Black's AlasNoAxis. I love Medeski Martin & Wood  and so does my daughter. They put a kids album out a few years back which is outstanding, but overall they are just an incredible and durable trio.

Pittsburgh's own Three Rivers Arts Fest runs from June 3rd to June 12! So far they had The Blind Boys of Alabama. Today is a free show from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Coming this week are amongst the couple of bands each day are Buckwheat Zydeco and the River City Brass Band on Sunday June 12th!

July 15th-17th - Baltimore's Artscape. I mentioned this about a week ago! How can you pass this up? G Love headlines Saturday night!

Free in Philly!! I'm new to Philly, but I'm quick to pick up on things. Last year for the fourth of July Goo Goo Dolls & the Roots played a free show prior to the 4th of July fireworks. As far as free concerts go, that was pretty awesome! What I didn't know is that there is a week of free stuff leading up to the 4th of July. If you head over to VisitPhilly.com, you'll find that from June 24 – July 4: "Philadelphia celebrates the Fourth of July with 11 days of patriotic fun" Amongst the acts taking part are Morris Day and the Time, Aaron Neville, and The Roots.

Special Mention: Nancy Micciulla, who had a show cancelled in Manayunk, the popular Philly neighborhood due to rain. This has yet to be scheduled, but I'm sure to drop a post here, when it is rescheduled. She comes highly recommended from my source on the inside, and he has yet to be wrong (Blind Pilot, Pokey Lafarge, Joe Pug, Carolina Chocolate Drops, the Low Anthem, Daniel Lefkowitz, and David Wax Museum are among his recommendations)

Bands Pick The Bands - 2016 XPoNential Music Festival Presented by Subaru - Artists Preview

Wooo Hooooo It's XPoNential Fest Time!!!!  Every year WXPN brings a ton of great bands and artists to the Wiggins Park shore in Camden, NJ.  With so many bands on the line-up it's daunting to figure out which bands to see.  Fortunately, the way WXPN does the line-ups you CAN make it to every band should you choose.  However, we all know it's going to be hot as hell.  Not quite as hot as 2011 with the 100 degree days, but still super hot.   Luckily for us, some of the festival performers have put in their two cents for which bands they are excited about. Rosemary Fiki   starts the fest at 4pm today on the JerseyArts.Com Marina Stage. Let's see what she's recommending: Band Most Excited to Share the Festival Stage with : This is our first time time performing at XPoNential so to be completely honest, I'm super stoked to share the Festival stage with everyone! If I absolutely had to choose, I would say The Districts. We actually shared the stage wit

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve
