I've heard about the Black Keys for some time now. I rarely listen to the radio, so I missed their emergence. But from what I read of misunderstood rock band from Ohio, I had been intrigued to listen to them for some time.
However, for me new music typically comes down to free stuff from podcasts, remembering to sit down and find them on YouTube, or getting music from my brother-in-law who is ten years my junior. The latter was the way Brothers finally landed in front of me. It was great! It was so good that when shopping with my sister, I put the album in her basket for my nephew to half cancel my copyright infringing sins.
I of course loved, 'Howlin For You' the commercial smash hit. The song is somewhat reminiscent of The Fratellis 'Chelsea Dagger' (of Heineken commercial fame), but 10 times better. 'Tighten Up' is also excellent. It starts off with some catchy whistling and starts to rock out. About 2/3 through @ 2:30 there is a pretty kick-ass modulation wrapping up its awesomeness. But the album doesn't end there. Like its mythical rock god cousins The White Stripes' albums, the Black Keys album Brothers has some hits, but is a complete disc through and through.
Live version of 'Ten Cent Pistol'@3:25 following 'She's Long Gone' from Brothers by the Black Keys
editor note: the Jimmy Kimmel live version has been removed.
'Ten Cent Pistol' is extremely versatile. It could easily have been slipped in on a Creedence Clearwater Revival album right after 'I Put A Spell On You.' Or like stellar Brothers tracks 'the Only One' and 'Never Gonna Give You Up' you can swap out vocalist/guitarist Dan Auerbach for Sharon Jones of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings fame or Aretha Franklin and you have a R&B sensation.

Heavy blues come out throughout the album with 'Next Girl', 'Sinister Kid' featuring Nicole Wray on backingvocals, and this week's SONG OF THE WEEK 'Ten Cent Pistol.'

excerpt from 'Ten Cent Pistol' from the Black Keys
There's nothing worse
In this world
Than payback from a
Jealous girl
The laws of man
Don't apply
When blood gets in
A woman's eye
Well, she hit them with her ten cent pistol
Because they ruined her name
Well, she hit them with her ten cent pistol
And they've never been the same
In this world
Than payback from a
Jealous girl
The laws of man
Don't apply
When blood gets in
A woman's eye
Well, she hit them with her ten cent pistol
Because they ruined her name
Well, she hit them with her ten cent pistol
And they've never been the same
