Nine Inch Nails - 'Down In It' from Pretty Hate Machine
Nine Inch Nails - 'Down In It' live from the "final" concert @ at the Wiltern Theater, 9.10.09
Back in high school, I loved being exposed to new music. I can't really say finding new music; because I was usually so far behind that I would get into most bands when they were putting out their 2nd album. There were bands I loved, but for the most part it seemed natural that I would like them. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers were all new to me, but they were still all over MTV. The first band, which I really felt like I had found something awesome was Nine Inch Nails.
You see, there was a classmate of mine Kevin S. He had his cool back pack with band logos sharpied onto it. But the thing was it wasn't to show off what he liked so he could to talk to you about them. Those were just "his" bands. I had no idea who they were, and he wasn't about to go out of his way to tell you about what he already knew. I didn't know what NIN was or Siouxsie and the Banshees where. I never did end up listening to the latter, but eventually I got my hands on Pretty Hate Machine by Nine Inch Nails via some Record Club. (If you are unfamiliar with the actual logo, please go to NIN.com or Wikipedia)
I was so excited when I finally found it. It was like I had been invited to some exclusive club finally. I wasn't a cool kid growing up, so I did not care that I may have been the last to know about Nine Inch Nails, I was just so thrilled to actually be listening to them. It was so unique for me. I had never heard angst like that, nor had I ever heard the synthesized beats quite like that as well. I listened to that album repeatedly, working towards memorizing the lyrics as fast as I could. As soon as I did I had to show someone. I went to my cute down the road neighbor, who represented all things cooler than I would be. Not in a "popular" kind of a way, but in a fascinating unique coolness that just happens.
Funny thing was the Earth actually did not shatter once I had heard the disc. I still wasn't cool, and Kevin still didn't talk to me about music. I did however find one of my all time favorite bands. Within a year or two, their masterpiece album The Downward Spiral would come out and I would be hooked for life. I listen to a lot of Singer/Songwriter and Indie now, but you can never replace the Trent Reznor style angst and creativity.
Just then a tiny little dot caught my eye.
It was just about too small to see.
But I watched it way too long.
That dot was pulling me down."

Excerpt from 'Down In It' by Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor)
"Kinda like a cloud I was up way up in the sky.
And I was feeling some feelings you wouldn't believe.
Sometimes i don't believe them myself and
And I was feeling some feelings you wouldn't believe.
Sometimes i don't believe them myself and
I decided i was never coming Down.
Just then a tiny little dot caught my eye.
It was just about too small to see.
But I watched it way too long.
That dot was pulling me down."

"I used to be so big and strong.
I used to know my right from wrong.
I used to never be afraid.
I used to be somebody.
I used to have something inside.
Now just this hole it's open wide.
Used to want it all.
I used to be somebody."
I used to know my right from wrong.
I used to never be afraid.
I used to be somebody.
I used to have something inside.
Now just this hole it's open wide.
Used to want it all.
I used to be somebody."
