Featured Artist - Ted Leo and the Pharmacists

Ted Leo makes me feel young!

Who is Ted Leo, most of you ask????  Hannah Levin's intro of the Live KEXP podcast of his Triple Door concert in Seattle back in '07(if you follow the link, you'll need to go pretty far down the page) sums their style and energy best:
"There are some bands that that you see live where you’re just really impressed from a technical standpoint with musician-ship and there’s some bands that are all about the visceral energy that they bring to the stage, and based on the sound check I saw, I feel very safe saying you're going to get both. Please welcome Ted Leo and the Pharmacists”

I stumbled onto Ted Leo after I started getting KEXP Song of the Day & KCRW Today's Top Tune.  Oddly enough I thought the punkish Ted Leo & the Pharmacists were a reggae band, as the first song I ever heard from them is "Unwanted Things' with its groovy rhythm.

I quickly realized I was wrong, when I found the above live show. Once I gave it a listen I knew I needed to find more. I found another podcast right away grabbing the AOL Interface podcast. In this case it was a solo set. I even found his infamous cover of 'Since You've Been Gone' thanks to my brother-in-law.   I was hooked, between the live band show & the solo stuff. I was captivated.

Ted Leo has an energy that I haven't felt listening to music since getting into Reel Big Fish a decade ago.  He makes punk palatable on daily basis which I can't get from Pennywise or Bad Religion.  For some reason I need to be in the mood for punk, but with Ted Leo I can get into him anytime.

Ted Leo Makes Me Feel Old!

Let me clarify!  I'm in the mood for Ted Leo, nearly anytime.  On the fateful night I found out I was old, I wasn't in the mood for waiting for Ted Leo.  He was playing a solo show at a hip Art Gallery/venue in Baltimore.  I even got in free, walking in with an opener and catching the venue ticket take in a generous mood.  I wasn't aware the show was sold out, but they didn't seem to care since I had just helped out with equipment.  I sat for an hour waiting for some music.  The two openers had not come on yet; I had no idea who they were.  Even worse, I was a slightly concerned over the legitimacy of my parking space.  I was more so concerned over being over tired for the following day's duties of watching my 9 month old daughter by myself.

I officially became old when the pair of worries combined with the new found annoyance of waiting for two bands I had never listened to before to start.  I left.  I did not get to see Ted Leo.  I was OLD!

Since that fateful night, Ted Leo & the Pharmacist have put out a fantastic album.  The tempo, speed, and seriousness vary throughout the album.   It's during this album is when I realized, you really need to read his lyrics to enjoy his music the best. I was starting to "learn" the lyrics for the lead single 'Bottled in Cork' from repeat listening of the track. Once I finally did read the lyrics it was laughable what I thought it was. Seriously "it's starting to look Canadian" really is nothing like "Cone headed". But in all seriousness, it's a great track and a great song to some ideas that had clearly been unresolved in his head.

Bands Pick The Bands - 2016 XPoNential Music Festival Presented by Subaru - Artists Preview

Wooo Hooooo It's XPoNential Fest Time!!!!  Every year WXPN brings a ton of great bands and artists to the Wiggins Park shore in Camden, NJ.  With so many bands on the line-up it's daunting to figure out which bands to see.  Fortunately, the way WXPN does the line-ups you CAN make it to every band should you choose.  However, we all know it's going to be hot as hell.  Not quite as hot as 2011 with the 100 degree days, but still super hot.   Luckily for us, some of the festival performers have put in their two cents for which bands they are excited about. Rosemary Fiki   starts the fest at 4pm today on the JerseyArts.Com Marina Stage. Let's see what she's recommending: Band Most Excited to Share the Festival Stage with : This is our first time time performing at XPoNential so to be completely honest, I'm super stoked to share the Festival stage with everyone! If I absolutely had to choose, I would say The Districts. We actually shared the stage wit

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve
