Featured Artist - Pigeon John

Attention Please: With a late 2010 release and a spot on the VW Super Bowl commercial, Pigeon John has a lyrical announcement to the world.  Jump on board now, 'cause "I'm 'bout to blow up"

Dragon Slayer                         Excerpt from Pigeon John - 'The Bomb'

"Ok, come on everybody won’t you clap your hands
White folks do it on time if they can
Sounds good, now here’s the plan
Let’s all sing together like we’re in the same band

I’m the bomb and I’m ’bout to blow up
I’m the bomb and I’m ’bout to blow up"

The commercial was a mash up of a classic Gene Kelly & Donald O'Connor clip,

and the hot new single from Dragon Slayer the 2010 release from Pigeon John.

WHO IS THIS GUY?

For those of you who have never heard of the one and only Pigeon John, he has been a putting out solo rap albums for quite some time now, and has been featured or has been part of a few groups in recent years.

The best two collaborations featuring Pigeon John are 'All In' also featuring Gift of Gab, on The Grouch & Eligh's 2009 Say G&E! album.

The other being the duo Rootbeer with his man Flynn when they dropped, 'Pink Limosine'

Where Did He Come From?

Although Pigeon John has been releasing albums since nearly the last century, Pigeon John, hit some notoriety with the 2006 album Pigeon John & The Summertime Pool Party.  The album features two party legends.  The first being 'Money Back Guarantee' which in my mind is a hall of fame party track.

Excertp from 'Money Back Guarantee' by Pigeon John

"Just trying to meet you
Hey you across from the bar
I ain’t no pimp or athlete or hip hop star
Just trying to meet you
I'm just a regular guy
I don't make that much money girl I aint gotta lie"

And second party song  is the lyrical highlight reel of 'Welcome To The Show'.  Including my fav lyric.
Used to have a white girl now I gotta white wife
Kinda getting used to hearing "brother that aint right"

'Welcome to the Show' by Pigeon John(the actual song starts at 1:40).

THESE ARE AWESOME, TELL ME MORE!!!

Summer Time Pool Party also includes, 'Do The Pigeon', as any good rapper needs a signature song.  It may not rank with "The Humpty Dance, but it is still it's an excellent ode to just who is Pigeon John.  Special note: don't confuse this with the Sesame Street song.

Mixed in amongst the tracks are some humorous skits, similar to albums of Eminem, etc.  'Higher' is another feature track.  I could tell you more about the song, but what else do you need to know outside of the fact that he rhymes with SWAYZE!!

Up next is 'Freaks; about the local cool kids, even giving his local mall a shout out.

"Freak Freaks all in the Northridge Mall
Christmas shopping in the middle of the Fall
Freaks Freaks trying to graduate school
On a 6 year plan but they still look cool"

WHAT'S NEXT

What's next depends on you.  Check him out on tour.  He's playing some West Coast dates and a trip to France, but when he swings to town, be sure to see him.  He mainly plays out West near his home base, but I was lucky enough to catch him last year outside of Harrisburg, Pa.  The logistical stars aligned for me that night, as he came on first of four bands, and the crowd was still thin for the cool kids on a college campus being fashionably late, allowing my then two year old to dance her heart out to his full throttle set.

Bands Pick The Bands - 2016 XPoNential Music Festival Presented by Subaru - Artists Preview

Wooo Hooooo It's XPoNential Fest Time!!!!  Every year WXPN brings a ton of great bands and artists to the Wiggins Park shore in Camden, NJ.  With so many bands on the line-up it's daunting to figure out which bands to see.  Fortunately, the way WXPN does the line-ups you CAN make it to every band should you choose.  However, we all know it's going to be hot as hell.  Not quite as hot as 2011 with the 100 degree days, but still super hot.   Luckily for us, some of the festival performers have put in their two cents for which bands they are excited about. Rosemary Fiki   starts the fest at 4pm today on the JerseyArts.Com Marina Stage. Let's see what she's recommending: Band Most Excited to Share the Festival Stage with : This is our first time time performing at XPoNential so to be completely honest, I'm super stoked to share the Festival stage with everyone! If I absolutely had to choose, I would say The Districts. We actually shared the stage wit

New Release Q&A - Sonja Sofya answers some questions for "Patterns We Know"

The buzz has been all about Sonja Sofya and her new album The Patterns We Know .  Tonight Sonja Sofya and band take to the stage at Boot & Saddle in South Philly along with a great line-up featuring Arc Divers and the dove and the wolf. Right off the top we have some great reasons to expect great things from this album, such as produced by Ross Bellenoit at Turtle Studios and excellent musicianship by guitarist/producer Ross Bellenoit, bassist Jonathan Colman , and drummers Matt Scarano and Jonas Oesterle . But we at Root Down In The Shadow wanted to dig further and see what Sonja had to say about the album. Here's 3 questions we had for the songstress Sonja Sofya: RDITS: What was the impetus to make a full length record and why did you pick the people you worked with? At a certain point, playing and writing as much as I was, it felt like the logical next step, but I waited for a while, trying to find the "perfect" time to go into the stud

Root Down Is A Sometime Thing...

From the desk of Root Down: Greetings Friends!  It's been a bit, how've ya been? What's new? I've been gone for some time and I feel that I owe everyone an explanation of where I've been.   Honestly, I haven't gone anywhere. Since I've last posted, I've still been frequenting my favorite record store, been hitting up local shows, hosted a few house shows, traveling for special shows, and making music a large part of my life.  What I haven't been doing is losing countless hours fretting over knowing every new artist, tweeting, and losing sleep editing articles that spend less time getting read than I spent writing.  I can definitively tell you that I'm DONE attempting to make Root Down In The Shadow "a thing" in the music world.   I don't need Twitter followers, a lively blog, or anyone else's validation to share my love for music. It doesn't help my enjoyment of music to follow a shit-ton of bands on eve
